And I was there with rod, reel, some lures and net to greet them. I went fishing for Striped Bass a couple of hours this afternoon and I was not let down. It has been slow fishing the last couple of trips but today made up for it. I was fishing from my jet ski off of Virginia Beach/ Cape Henry for two hours and caught eight Striped Bass in 30 to 40 feet of water. Three on a big Stretch and the other five hit a 6oz parachute rig trailing a 42oz mojo. I kept a 36 and 40 incher. Great way to end my day. The birds, bait, boat, whales were all there. I saw a lot of people hooked up.

This is the time of year when many good weather fishermen are thinking of the summer ahead and the possibilities of some great fishing in warmer weather conditions. The spring and summer saltwater fishing in 2011 was phenomenal and very much a memorable year. We are expecting the same if not better results this summer. However we are currently in the dead of winter and the weather is below freezing on the west coast of Vancouver Island British Columbia as arctic air has invaded the coast. Of course many realize that there is opportunity to fish twelve months of the year in this area of scenic Vancouver Island. Many anglers are currently enjoying the clear sunny but chilled weather on the Stamp River where they are fishing in a fresh water body for Winter Steelhead. The fishing has been relatively consistent over the last three months for Fall and Winter Steelhead. Just two weeks ago the area had the biggest rains of the fall and winter and the water levels came up extremely high which slowed the fishing but with little precipitation since, the fishing is once again improving with new Steelhead entering the system daily. Of course Barkley Sound which is predominately protected water and the open waters outside the Ucluelet Harbor have opportunity during the winter for hearty anglers to fish for Winter Chinook. These Chinook could also be referred to as residential fish average eight to twelve pounds and can often get up and over twenty pounds, feed on the hearty and abundant rich resources of bait fish that are found close to the surf line and the many small islands and large island chains of the Sound and also the many large sandy banks outside the Ucluelet Harbor. The pristine water of Barkley Sound and the inshore and offshore water off of Ucluelet are perhaps a couple of the only areas along British Columbia’s majestic coastline where one could fish twelve months of the year and have opportunity to land a twenty plus pound salmon.

Justin Fleck docked the Excel at Fisherman's Landing January 20 after a 15-day trip with 26 anglers to the Buffer Zone and Hurricane Bank. The big rig's holds were stuffed with large tuna and an excellent catch (about half-limits) of wahoo, one of the best catches so far this year. "We fished the Hurricane and The Zone," he said. "We got three and a half days on the bank and a day and a half at the Buffer Zone. We ended up with seven cows. It was a great trip, and we were full, so we came home a day early."

Eric Woyce of San Francisco won first place for his 212-pound yellowfin. He said it bit a sardine on an Owner 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook and 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon. He used 130-pound Line One spectra on an Avet 30 W reel and a Calstar 6455 XXXH rod. "It was a textbook fight of 45 minutes," Woyce remarked. "The crew was really a big help."

On his first trip, James Falotico of Islip, NY won second place for a 208-pound tuna. It bit a sardine on 7/0 Quick Rig hook tied to 100-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, an Avet 30 W reel and a Super Seeker 1 X 3 rod.

Ted Prager, Jr. took third jackpot for a 206-pounder. He bagged it with a sardine on a 7/0 Eagle Claw hook on 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Penn 50 reel and a new Super Seeker Rail Boss rod.

Steve Olson of Newbury Park had two cows, at 219 and 209 pounds. He fished sardine on 6/0 Eagle Claw hooks tied to 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 100-pound Line One spectra, a Penn 50 SW reel by Cal Sheets and a Calstar 765 XH rod. The big fish fought for an hour and a half.

Dean Jefferis of Redondo Beach helped himself to a 204-pounder after it sucked in his sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook. He said he used 130-pound pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Penn 50 VSW reel And a Calstar 7455 XXH rod wrapped by Bob Sands.

Jake Hensley got a 205-pounder, one more cow that came home to the Excel.

I towed my jet ski to Virginia Beach early this morning and departed Rudee Inlet at the first hint of light. I had my first fish by 0700 hrs and had caught at least nine by 0800. All fish were caught on the troll with Stretch and Mojos. They ranged in size from 36-42 inches. It was calm and glassy first thing and a steady 15-20 by the time I headed in at 0900 hrs. The fish and bait were thick from Rudee to Cape Henry, every boat I saw had a fish on. A great day! Here are some pictures.

Every season is a little different but the fall of 2011 will be one I shall remember for a while. Typically fishing begins to slow down on both the Upper and Lower O, however this fall it has done exactly the opposite. Both sections are fishing at their best right now and if you do not mind cold morning air temperatures, the fishing will warm you up as soon as you get into some of the trophy fish we have been seeing on a regular basis recently.

Day one with my Texas group started out looking bad. 30+ mph winds, cold temps, and LOW LOW water is what we were faced with. Billy Myers, Ryan Jennings, and Chuck Ellis had faith in me to put them on some fish and that is what we did! Plan A – trout fishing went out the window quick as we only found one trout to make it to the icechest. Our first stop for reds had them coming into the boat one after another and the Burn Hacks started flying!! Once the bite slowed down we moved roughly 300 yards away and it was a done deal. With 20 reds in the box and another 20 + released to fight again. The reds, puppy drum, and bay snapper could not resist our shrimp under a cork and these guys loved every second of battling these brutes!! With our limits caught and plenty more released we headed in. Big thanks to Capt Rob DuPont for running the second boat with the other half of the crew, as they had a blast also.

I finally succumb to the realization that this “lake” fishing is pretty simple…but, lake “catching” is a different animal all together. After numerous trips to Lake Konawa with subpar results, I finally swallowed my pride and sought some local knowledge. I have been in contact with local guide Shawn Morales at www.crosswindsguide.com for the last few months, and the guy has done everything but swim under the boat and hook the fish for me. So, this weekend, I left my boat on the trailer, and my son and I spent the day with Shawn on his boat. I wasn’t overly optimistic, since we had our 1st major cold front come through, and as we arrived at the ramp, the truck temp gauge was reading a chilly 28 degrees.

I was invited to go fishing with a group of guys in the James River today. It was Dennis and myself on Micheal's boat with his two sons, James and John. All of them reside in Williamsburg Va. We left Jamestown Marina in Mike's 20 ft Bay Rider skiff around 1530 and fished for Striped Bass along a shoal off of Kingsmill. We caught a couple of schoolie stripers using stretch 18's. Tried some storms also but only the stretches on a slow troll produced. There were lots of terns picking off silversides so I tried to get a couple pics of them diving on the baits, easier said than done but I got a couple. It was beautiful flat and glassy afternoon with air and water temps around 60 degrees. We were back at the dock before dark. A great way to spend the late afternoon! Here are a couple of pictures.

Also we had one of Patrick's soccer buddies with us and it was a pleasure seeing how enthusiastic he was catching some new species. The boys this spring and summer have worked the boat hard, not quite adapted for commercial fishing but they did alright putting aside some money for college. Today the target was gags, we left at sunrise to find some pogies.
