    Zihuatanejo In January

Has anyone fished Zihuatanejo, Mexico in the winter time? If so, what was your experience? I will be down there for a quick New Years trip, fishing inshore for Roosters on the 2nd and Offshore for Sails/Dorado/YFT on the 3rd. I know boats are ridiculously inexpensive compared to most destinations ($250 - $600 per day). Do you get what you pay for? I see from a few Mexico fishing report sites there is a decent sailfish bite offshore and Roosterfish inshore this time of year. There are even rumors of cow YFT if you venture 30+ miles out and chase the dolphin pods, but I am not finding much comfirmation on this front. Looks like very few people have written about this destination on Sportfishermen.com so this is my attempt to get a thread going...

    Any information would be appreciated.

Was down there 2 years ago in January. The fleet consists of a bunch of pangas and a few older betrems and other sport fishers. The sailfishing can be GREAT, but is on and off from week to week. We panga fished just to mess around 2 half days and caught 2 sails each trip. Bring some decent rods and reels with you to trade for trips... also, quality white 50-60 pounds test was in demand. They love penn internationals. Ask around at the docks and you will pretty much figure whats going on.

It is pretty good just have to be careful who you fish with. There are a lot of boat drivers and only a few fisherman. The size of the boat has nothing to do with the quality of the capt there. Sailfishing is good at that time and there should be some marlin mixed in. The average panga is like 280 a day and will fish up to 3 people.

My best sail day there was nine and lost a big black and had some smaller yellowfin. They do get the giant yellowfin that they get in PV just not in Jan. from what i hear.

I used to fish with Llamarada and Capt Chico or Secuestro de Amor with Capt Temo (011) 52 755 557 8801. That is Temo cell not sure if it is still the same number. Also, the boat the "Yellowfin" is pretty good. If you can't find these guys go to Garrabos rest. and ask around they can lead you in the right direction, they also have great food and Limonadas. They are one block back for the pier and like 3 down. Avoid the guys selling trips on the street. It will be a long boat ride for baracuda etc. Not my cup of tea!

If you want give me a call 610 306 1970, Greg. I can answer anyother questions.

WWW.sportfishing-ixtapa.com let Ed Kunze set you up great guy and is on the pulse down there as already mentioned Zihue is either smokin or dead but I usually still go down once a year both January and Febuary are great but if if is a full moon the bite totally shuts down period, mostly a sailfish show so we usually take 20wides and 30 to 50# rods the shit on all the boats are just meat sticks!!!PEACE

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am already booked with Capt Temo on Secuestro for my offshore day. Luckly I will be fishing on the 2nd and 3rd of January which is around 7 days before the full moon. We'll see what happens.

    Talking Zihuatanejo Report

Sorry for the delay in posting my report from January 2nd and 3rd. Ended up 4 for 7 on Sailfish and 2 for 2 on Dorado for my one offshore day. Definitely a great sailfish bite this time of year and very reasonably priced at $250/day for a 25' Panga. Inshore day was pretty uneventful searching for Roosters 20 miles south of Zihua along the beach. Only managed a large Jack Crevalle on topwater after 4 hours of casting.

Here are the best of the best shots from the trip, enjoy...
