Ring Riing RIIIIIIIIINNNNGGG, Sportfishermen.com this is Tim How can I help you. What are you doing saturday? You wanna go fishing? Ah Yeah whats the forecast... Light and slight until later.
OOOH BOY anyone that knows me and its late may or June knows what I want to do this time of year. With the latest reports that one was weighed in this past week. It was Lets go..........SHARKIN BOYS........... Checked some temp charts water was still cool but i've caught them in this type water before and with a mako caught down south and some whip tails around that was the plan.
The crew was set it would be Me, Doug and Noah (Dougs Teenage son). I always enjoy fishing with Doug( Trolling and jigging Report Bass, Blues. ) and Noah (My nemesis he's been whoopin my butt fishin since he was 4 or 5) and we always try to have a back up plan. Being that it was a tad less than ideal for sharking we would bring sea bass gear just in case.
Met at the boat at 5:30 and we where on our way to the triple wrecks. Long story short. Had a nice drift, Some really nice baits big Macks that Doug got from Jim's in Cape May. We had company so we were not the only ones with sharks on our minds. Water was 58 had a 1/2knot to a knot of drift.
But no love, excepy for a spiny dog and a sea bass of the bottom so after 4hrs of rain(which was'nt in any forecast)
we decided to head in to reef site 11 and maybe set up for sharks and sea bass.
Sharking was out of the question as the fleet was thick so we got in line and started drifting the reef. Some of the drifting was a little tricky as the party boats where anchoring on sections of the red bird cars. So we decided to move around and find a not so crowded section. Well we found what we were looking for, seems the sea bass were keying in on sand eel blooms and it was on fire
We must have caught well over 150 bass: kept 30 for the table. Mackerel was the key for baiting them. Squid was ok but no where near as good as mackerel for bait. after we had enough fun with bait we decided to start jigging and that was a ball. I love catching any species on the jig and we had fun and a really nice surprise.
Doug caught a cod on the jig and it was a keeper. It seems every year we hear about more and more cod being caught down this way and that would be fantastic to have a fishery once again for cod here in southern NJ.
Well no love from the sharks but we have meat for the table. If we spent the day doing this you would wear yourself out especially with kids so if you have a chance get on out there and catch them up.
I took pics and will get them on monday as my card reader is at the office
Thanks
