Well, the fishing season has been slow for CR standards. But down south, out of Golfito (Golfo Dulce), I am working out of Zancudo.
The blue, warm water has moved in---seeing lots of sails (freejumpers, tailers, cutters) and getting lots of bites. The Mahi Mahi are few, but getting a bite about every other day. The porpoise schools have been numerous with tunas up to 100+ lbs in them. A few marlin creeping around here & there. Even some wahoo bites too.
Past 3 days, I have raised about 10 sails per day, hooking most, catching some (gotta turn the handle!!!). The guys working the porpoises are scoring on tunas everyday they try. Most are 30-50 lbs, but there have been some hogs on & a few nice 80-90 lbs fish decked.
But, the big drama of the day is marlin.
Black & Blue.
Yesterday, had a 400 lbs black on for a while, only 15 minutes after putting the lure spread out.
Today, had a 500 lbs blue up in the sailfish spread--for me on a 25 ft cc, that's 2 teasers, 4 ballyhoo rigged on 100 lbs leaders, on 20 + 30 lbs outfits. OOPS. Up on the teaser, switched em over to a pitch bait, but he jumped off & away. 45 seconds later, notice the right flat is disappearing REALLY FAST. OOPS AGAIN. No clicker, light drag. come tight & the marlin is 600 yds behind us, raising he**. OOPS. Ran her down, but the 20 lbs line gave quickly. gone.
lots of action the past few days. seeing fish, getting bites, catching some, losing some. but the weather has been spectacular & you can see the bites coming 10-30 yds away. good fishing. steady action.
The bite is not 30s, 40s, 50s---don't get spoiled by those occasional days. If you want to get off the beaten path & take a little fishing break--get to Costa Rica. Fishing is good up & down the coast.
**Caught a rooster this morning b4 heading offshore. rooster fishing has been steady too. some days, 1 or 2 fish b4 the bite dies (then you go offshore), some days 4-8 fish, up to 60 lbs.
If you can't make it down here......enjoy the march snow![]()
