YOUNG MATES

I was told this story by a friend of mine, what do ya'll think ?? This guy I know, (i'll call him Jim) Chartered a Boat for a Tournament recently and they were out there trollin and Jim says to one of the two Mates on the boat, hey there's a White One behind the left dredge !! The Mate totally ignores him and sure enough they get the flat line bite and miss the fish !! Jim says to the Mate, I told you he was there, and the Mate proceeds to tell him I heard you and the next time you have somthin to say, write it down !! In other words don't bother us by tellin us anything !! Jim didn't say anything to the Capt. or anyone else on the boat. (BIG P$$$Y). I would have told Junior to go in the salon and stick the pacifier back in his mouth before I stuck it up his A$$. I was shocked to hear this story, what is wrong with these young PUNKS today ??

I would tell him to go phuckk himself. If your not cooperating and fishing as a team, then you shouldn't be fishing together in a tournament. It would be the last time I'd charter that boat if he was the mate and I would definately let the captain know. Just bad business!

Talk to the captain and let it show in the mate tip....if there were 2 mtes talk to the captain and tell him the good guy gets this...and the guy that has a chip on his shoulder gets this..done deal

THere are alot of young "hotshots" in this biz, and its ashame. But there are also some really quality young guys too. Guys like Jake Emche, Spencer Cropper, Jimmie Roberts and a few others come to mind.

I think the young hotshots need to be put in their place, so maybe they get on the right path.

The shame of it is....that it is an extremely fast growing number of mates. They also tend to forget who really has control of the boat. It really is a shame!!!! Like some have said in the past...the ones that talk the most know the least..... and the ones that talk the least know the most....oh how so true this is!!!!!

young or seasoned they are there but as franky said their are some incredible mates on charter boats.

I'll never forget the mate on the Big Hunter in Isla Mujueres. It was just Nico and I chartering the boat and nico had never caught a sail. Captain Brian Peele calmly said to John Henry sail on the right flat. i could barely hear him. John Henry said Nico come over to the right flat. Pick up the rod, make sure it is in free spool and clicker off, watch the fish and when you see him go after the bait like now!, drop the bait and let him have the free spool with no pressure on the line or very little. ease up on the drag and now you just hooked your first sailfish. Just like that!!

On the other hand I remember me and another Sf.com member fishing out of the country. We were both struggling a little bit that day. The mate was instructed not to touch a rod on a fish no matter what. The mate was on the bridge with the captain and I could tell he was getting frustrated because we were struggling and had sancoched a bunch! Billfish comes up on the left short. Captain says nothing and taps the mate, mate flies off the bridge without calling out the fish and grabs the left short and promptly blows it. I don't care how good you are and what your credentails are as a capt or mate. That $hit is wrong and pissed off my buddy and I. I wonder if he knows thats part of the reason I have not fished with him again.

Your right that was wrong for the mate to ignore him, but why didn't Jim go to the rod it was a tournament? I would think if you charter a boat for a tournament you would be able to grab a rod and hook a fish yourself.

Bill. I agree with you that its wrong. Out of the country is one trhing but here where we fly release flags it could hurt business. If u were looking to charter a boat and u had no clue what u were doing walking down the dock u see a boayt with 1 flag and u see a boat with 6. Most charter clients will talk to the boat that caught 6. In actually the boat that caught 6 had 6 bites had good anglers and the boayt that caught 1 had 15 bites but the charter wanted to hook them so they hadf a bad day and caught 1. Now u lost a trip not saying the crew would have caught more but if the crew only caught 1 then they lost there own trip. Sorry for the poor grammer typing in a tree.

Bobby - great point. And this was a place that does fly flags but gets zero walk by business. Maybe places like CR have the right idea not flying any flags or Guate who only fly flags on Blue or Black Marlins. I kinda like the way the guys call out numbers on the radio in guate. They rarely say or care about how many they catch. Its all about how many they raised and how many bit. Thats their job! Nevertheless I always make sure the mate AND captain know that we want to hook every fish and instruct not to touch a rod unless of course everyone is eating, sleeping or on the $hitter.
