Granted, I would never, ever utter anything even close to what was said in the original post, but not all mates are a 125lb runts. I'm 6'-0" 240lbs, and a former PA state champion wrestler. Try bitch-slapping me & I'll put my bait knife & needle-nose pliers to good use.If you don't like the job I do, the tip should reflect that.

im 16 and have worked for man captains in well known tournys but would never ignore or make such a rude comment that kid needs to get his ass kicked and maybe learn how to f-ing mate or get the hell off a boat
I think the age has nothing to do with it and thats what you're getting at and I agree. Its more about the attitude of some mates. I feel that the mate should only speak up to the paying charter if something they are doing is going to hurt someone. The good news is you can always throw out some plugs into the spread and walk up to the bidge and turn the pointy end towards home.
Teddyp, In this particular case the Mates were YOUNG, my point being THESE 2 were ASSHOLES, not every Mate out there. Also a Mate that speaks only when spoken to is gonna have a tough go of it in the Charter Biz. Who wants to fish with a MATE that has the personality of a 2x6 ?? I know I don't !!
Seament,
I think the mate was way out of line but I would have said something to the Captain. I guess I have been lucky over the years in that majority of the boats we have chartered in Central America have had very good mates. I have only had 2 bad ones and one was a rookie and was filling in for the regular mate. The one I had problems with was in Los Suenos and by 9 am on the third day of fishing he went to the front of the boat and drank the rest of the day. Our hookup ratio went from 2 of 10 when he was working to 8 of 10 when we started hooking the fish. Thankfully that boat was banned after my blistering conversation with the dockmaster over the use of J hooks, Captain and mate drunk before we got back to the marina, mate wanting to bring a dead sail onboard that the J hook had killed.
I agree. I try & talk to the charters when appropriate. However, my eyes & attention are always fixed in the spread. Typically, our charters are full of questions. Some questions are good, "how do these circle hooks work?" Some are stupid, "how deep are we?" I always answer each question to the best of my knowledge, & with respect.

I try to answer the 'dumb' questions before they get asked, little low-down on where we are when we pull up, how much water were sitting in etc.
