    Thumbs up Yellow Fin Tuna/AU

Hi Guys, I was talking with a couple of long lost Mates on the weekend, the subject on catching yellow fin tuna came up.
I would like to see, If location can change how we fish?
My experience with yellow fin, was never our target fish,
Our target was Spanish Mackerel, whilst trolling Long Reef edges, When we slowed our boat to haul in hooked mackerel,
It was surprising how often a yellow fin tuna would hit and run.
My experience would suggest Either deep ripping or Jigging would work.
My friends have only ever fast trolled for tuna.
    ( IDEAS )
    Cheers.

No Carson what he is referring to is a different " spanish mac" its more like out King's. Aussie's love to target these "spanish macs" they can become greater than 60-90lbs over there.

I have fished in A/U and have a good friend that is a mate on a private fishing boat up off the reef and sometimes out of redcliffe.

The problem with the aussie tuna fishing is what I think to fast of trolling speed. The 7+ knots for the marlin wahoo and macs is ok but to fast for the yellowfin tunas. Also I think that most folks either troll a stretch type lure or some sort of jet or chugger like a marlin lure.

I know that off the the coast of redcliffe there is supposed to be a good yellowfin tuna fishery, with a commercial longline fleet and maybe a few greenstick boats.

My advise to you would be trolling naked and Skirted ballyhoo or what you call (gar) and soft or molded squid like in a spreader bar or squid chain and slow down your trolling speed to say 5.5 to 6 knots

Also a big spread helps draw attention to your baits. In areas like the outerbanks where we fish. 7 to 13 rods is what most boats will troll. Try adding teasers as well. I notice most boats in Australia troll either 3 or 4 rods.

Let me know where you are Fishing out of in Australia?? I would like to target some tunas on my next trip. I'm planning to be in the Moreton bay/ Redcliffe area in may/ June of this year. I was planing to bring some tackle to give to my brother in law and I could get you some things that we use in the states.

    Good luck,
    Taylor

    Thumbs up Western Australia

The Yellow Fin Tuna I was referring to, we caught off the edges
of Bernie and Dorry Islands- Shark Bay.
If you haven't had the chance to fish here, I guarantee you will
love the place. No bars to cross either. and yes they are big Mackerel.
    Cheers.

7-8 kts works for me. Deep diving plugs such as mann 30's and rapala magnums work the best followed by a jethead way way back. Blue/White, pink and green are good colors depending on the forage food.
