Anthony, your right, long lines WTFB catch big fish, normally we would be draggin the hills with one out now but we are canyon fishing for YFT. We had the 40# class bluefins last week schooled up on top and they would hit close but they are gone from the inside now. Word is that VA beach has the motherload comming our way, some bigguns too.

Sooooo, get you 80w ready to dump!

And please give 400 yards to any boat trolling inshore lumps. It is just the way it is off the coast here.

What about hook up ratio with all that line out?
How would you hammer a hook into a giant with all the line stretch 500+yds would generate?

All I hear is how WWWWWB is not necessary but its not like we are only pulling WWWWWWB baits. I have a short spread as well. It just happens that when bluefinning the WWWWWWB baits are USUALLY the only ones getting bit. Have caught plenty of lg yellowfins in Venezuela and Costa Rica using that method as well. Was even called a lier in C.R. by people who were convinced that you could only catch Lg. yellowfins by live baiting. As they were catching their 100lbers we were trolling up our 200+ lbers------------WWWWWWB.

Speaking of WWWB you should see where I like my sailfish spread. Most people would would call me a ding dong. Count me in on the Way back spread.
Personally, I want to catch any fish that comes near the boat, not just the ones that come to the transome but the ones that are a little boat shy as well. Call it two spreads in one or whatever, call me a ding dong, clueless or whatever, but it works for me.

BTW I picked this method up when fishing out of Hatteras in the early 90's so it aint just an OC thing.

I generally run the lever at strike which for me is 25# of drag on an 80W filled with 100#. Hook up ratio is darn near 100%...better than my ratio on yf's in an up-close spread.

yeah We very rarely do we ever miss a bite BFT wwb fishing, much better the up top fishing.

I think between the fish smashing the bait with that big old jaw and a razor sharp hook they set the hook deep themselves.

And yes we run the drag pretty high at strike, so once the line comes tight they drive the hook home.

    Don't do it.....

Having trolled many years in the canyons..I would like to give perhaps some vent a peave on trolling..in general.. in a fleet..I have personally watched a tight troll on either a canyon wall, structure, the edge during a bite or temp break with a bite..

Whoever, came up with the thought/notion that you could pick off a fish by trolling right behind someones spread ..well it's just wrong, smacks of rookieness and playing with fire, you have to put into port sometime and/or the same tournament dock..This happens quite a bit and usually after you pick up a couple of fish..during a troll bite.

In the same thought, trolling up into or along side a boats spread gets the same go F' off cudo's..don't do it. There is plenty of water and the bite isn't located just in someones spread.

Again, you will be met somewhere in port or at a tournament or out on the edge. By the way, most Cappy's have binoculars, and good memories.

We have had it happen so many times I can't count and the other Cappy, never responds to the radio, why? He knows' he is being a D' Head for doing it.

I am not sure what this has to do with wwwwb fishing. The issue is people not knowing how far some boats have baits out and if havng waybacks in necessary. Regarding canyon fishing, it is not a rookie move to get called in behind a boat that just hooked up. It is called working together. If you are talking about cutting close behind a charter you don't know, well, that is another story. That would be messing with a commercial boat's livilihood.

Snowranger Im not quite sure what post you read..but your response had nothing to do with what I posted..perhaps a re-read is in order...had nothing to do with anyone calling anyone in behind a spread or a commercial charter, being diddled, not quite sure where you got those two notions off of my post.

As far as relating to the WAAAAAAAAAAAY back trolling it has everything to do with it..Ive' watched googans target the splash birds being run off either the short or longs and run right over the shotgun..for the lets cut behind the spread manuever..it's a rookie move ive seen it time and again..im pretty sure we and a number of boats working an area never called these wingnuts over to troll across a spread because we just boated a few ..nope not happenin, even if I knew you I wouldn't call you in to troll behind my spread, that's not going to happen.
