I got a note from young Anthony, typo from Sunset, one blue, but still an incredible catch! Congrats Reel Chaos!
Maybe its just me, but standards have laxed in what is considered a 'Grand Slam'. Thats an impressive array of billfish, and certainly a noteworthy trip, but its no Grand Slam. In a baseball Grand Slam, 4 (FOUR) runs are scored. Im only counting 3 (THREE) species here. Blue, White and Sail. Just as a Two Billfish, Tuna and Mahi trip isnt a 'Grand Slam'. But maybe things have changed. Maybe Im wrong.
Codfather, you are wrong. A grand slam has always been 3 different species of billfish in a single day. A superslam is 4 species and 5 species is a Fantasy slam (which has only been done 3 times if I recollect properly).
THere is some nonsense these days perpetrated by the IGFA that a couple different species of any variety of meatfish can be a slam, but most people in the know don't acknowledge it as a slam in the traditional sense of the word.

Any billfish slam is a terrific achievement, but they are more likely in some areas than others. Two that I have fished in where they were quite possible were Venezuela, specifically the La Guaria Bank, and Cabo San Lucas. Blue and white marlin, plus a sail catches were and may well still be quite common in Venezuela. Super Grand Slams became fairly common after the fishermen there began to deep fish and catch daytime swordfish after completing a Slam on the bank.
Slams consisting of a blue and a striped marlin, plus a sailfish used to be fairly common in the summer months in Cabo. Supers completed with a black one were also possible but quite rare because blacks aren't as common as the other species. We managed a few of the latter, but they truly were rare.
To me, Slams never meant much. I considered every billfish, regardless of size or species, to be a special gift to be savored and thankful for, no matter what kind or how many we were blessed with catching on a given day or time of year. Now that I can no longer hunt for them, I miss them terribly.
My congratulations for the fine catch being discussed here.
