Is the wrapping totally necessary or just an additional pre-caution? I have seen a few instructional videos, one directly from Momoi, where they simply feed the mono into the braid and then glue it at the entry. It sure would be a lot easier and faster if you could eliminate that step.

You could probably get away with just gluing it, but I have had a few of factory wind-ons pull out that were only glued. If you whip the braid down there is no way that it can come out and it will always have a very smooth transition throught the guides. It only takes another 2 or 3 minutes to finish, and it might mean the difference in landing a $5000 tuna or the billfish of a life time. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas!

Thanks Joe! You too. Sounds like I just need to bite the bullet and learn how to do it right.

    Every single one of 'em.

    Wow!

    Thanks Capt.,
I have shyed away from making my own because the process intimidated me.
Your video really clears up all of the questions I had.
    Well, all except one.
What kind of loop do you, or any one else, prefer in your main line to attach the wind-on to? Bimini?

If I am using braid as my main line I will use a simple double overhand knot. Very simple and 100 % strength knot. If I am using mono I like to sleeve the mono I am using for a main line with a braided loop as well and connect the two with a loop to loop connection. That way I can change the topshot easily if i want to. Plus the loop to loop connection will go through the guised easily where a bimini twist, especially if not tied correctly or tightly will sometimes catch in the guides and make noise going through the guides.

Joe that was a great video! I just found it! I do have one queston.

You used 130 lb mono going into 200 lb hollow braid how could i use say 80 lb mono with the 200lb hollow braid? or even sixty or should i go down in size and use 100lb hollow core for the 60 and 80 or would the 200 work?

Cant wait to get my planer rod looking forward to it.

Zack, so far I have still used the 200 lb braid and I have not had one come apart yet the way I build them. You can drop down to either 80 lb or 130 lb braid. It will be much tighter to fish in the 80 lb, but the 130 is not that bad. But like I day, I have never had the 200 slip. The 80 lb mono is the smallest that I would even try putting into the 200. If I had to chose one that was going to get extreme pressure, I would go with the 130 braid.

    Windon Leaders

The video instruction does not seem to be available anymore.

Anyone know where I can find it.

I’ve used it several times and it is the best and simplest explanation I have seen.

Could you repost or send me a copy.

    Many thanks
