    Wind On Leaders

Do many of you use smaller wind on leaders like in 60-90 pound test? If so do you make yurs or buy them?

On main line 20# to 30# I tie on a 16' 80# wind on to a 3' Bimini. On my 50# main line I buy a factory made 300# hard mono (cut to 21') with a cats paw to a 3' Bimini. I like to take these heavy leaders off my reels when not in use and just lay them out some were, that way they don't get that memory spring.

    Mr Mango,

    Welcome to SFC!

I make some of my own wind-ons and purchase some others - especially heavier ones. If you are looking to purchase some or need to speak with a true expert about making your own, contact Basil Papas at BHP tackle http://www.bhptackle.com/index.php. Basil is a sponsor here and is top notch. He will steer you straight.

during the spring YFT season we use 25 ft of 60# fluro connected to the main line with an 80# spro or Croc swivel uni in the main line crimp on the leader side. Winds right through the guides

Depends what you are calling a "wind-on". If you are talking a conventional wind on with loop to loop connection in the 60-90lb class then no. The knots are small enough with those leader weights to not require the loop to loop. Bimini with a no name or a standard uni to uni works well. A swivel connection could work as long as you don't have all ceramic guides.

I agree. I use "true" wind ons for heavier than 150# leaders. Usually 250-550#.

I was thinking of traditional windons with a loop to loop connection.

I appreciate yours and others thoughts.
