    Wind-on leader question

I like using a wind-on leader since I'm usually fishing with a smaller inexperienced crew. Having the ability to wind the leader in tight is easier and safer. So here's my question.

How do you attach the main line to the leader? I use a Sambo wind-on swivel attached to the main line with a palomer knot. I then crimp the leader to the swivel completing the connection. If I'm using 30 or 40 lb floro as leader I tie the floro to the swivel with a clinch knot.

I thought this thread might provide some great insights on a better way to get this done.

for line class 50 and below we tie a bimini on the main line then tie 30 feet of leader material to the bimini with an albright. finally we put on an appropriate snap swivel and use approx 6 feet of line attached to the hook/lure/etc

That's what I used to do but switched to the small Sampo swivel with no snap to "downsize" the terminal gear. I've heard the hard-core YFT guys like to downsize to do better on leader shy fish. Have you found the snap swivels to scare fish off? I used to run half one way and half the other and have continued to increase the number of wind-ons I use.

For targeting tuna I started using a uni knot from 40 lb main line to 80 lb SPRO power swivel (not the aussie swivels) then crimp to 100 lb main line. 20-30 feet to hook/lure. Go longer if they get leader shy. Other applications I use either a spider hitch for a loop (very short here) then no name knot. You can use a bimini too instead of a spider hitch. DInk fishing hitch to no name 60 lb leader 18-20 feet then terminated in a 60lb coastlock. Allows for switching out baits very speedily and smoothly.

Had good results with each to these. But I do like the swivel and crimp style better in case have to switch out leader/ dull hook etc. I can uni and crimp faster than I can hitch/bimini and no name.
