Left early this morning from the Wrightsville Beach ramp with grouper on our mind. Forecast had been <10 kts. from the South however it was already blowing 10-15 before the sun got up. Caught bait with one throw and it was off to the inlet. As I went through the jetty walls, it was obvious that we were not making it to the grouper grounds. A stiff 3 foot slop was already prevalent with the wind continuing to blow. The only way I could go was SE so it was off to the 10 mile boxcars for our first stop to do a little mackerel fishing. On the way, a good friend calls from the 10 mile rock and says he just jumped off a sailfish. Well, we set out and it wasn't long before the double pogy rig on the flat line got nervous. Looking back all we saw was a streak through the water and we were off to the races. It continued it's streak across the back of the boat then along side of the boat before she started jumping. A 20 minute fight left me grabbing the leader and the bill of a 54" LJFL sailfish. Got some nice video and photos then revived and back in the water. Picked at the kingfish through all the trash (houndfish, cudas, etc.) before calling it a day around lunch.
Back at it again tomorrow provided the wind stops between now and then...
