    Widowmaker - Spencer Canyon Wahoos...9-10-11

This time of year is a love-hate kinda time for me. It's killer fishing and the Wahoos always make their 2 month appearance starting now but then again the cold weather is lurking right around the corner and I am definitely not a fan of the winters here in the Northeast.. For now I will focus on the love part and the great fishing that happens off Jersey right now. The offshore areas we fish are finally starting to recover from the hurricane and a nice batch of warm water just set up in 100 fathoms right in our canyons. We opted to run to the Spencer since that is the closest canyon to our inlet that had the break sitting in it. We put them out in 73.5 degree green water and after 30 min of trolling we found the77.5 degree cobalt blue water and a beautiful weedline. We picked away at some small gaffers and then the planer went off and we boat a nice 35lb bull. We released some more Dolphin and then worked further into the canyon to where the squid boats were dragging. We were looking for a tuna or white marlin bite behind the squiders but no love. So we head back to the weedline where we hook up a stud wahoo on the right long crystal/green witch on mono but couldn't hang on to him. Up and back on the inshore side of the weedline and no more bites so we decided to work back inside and toward home since it was 3:30. I'm reaching into the cooler to grab another ice cold Bud and BAMALAMA planer and flat line start screaming. Double header Wahoos on the cold dirty side of the break and we get both fish. Purple/Black flasher Ilander on the planer and blue/black sea witch with 8 oz. trolling weight got it done. Thank you Mother Ocean! What a great way to end the day and the 31 knot run 69 miles back to Cape May was picture perfect. Can't wait to do it again!
