I believe it is completely legal? I'm actually agreeing with the approach they took. Too much money on the line to lose a fish at the boat.
I suspect they had a good idea as to how big it was before they gaffed it. Just wanted to be sure when they got it in. Good payday if i remember correctly.

I can tell you right now Dave knew how big that fish was and decided to take it way before gaffing it. What he was doing was getting a length and girth measurment to do the formula and also to tell the tournament boat the measurments. If I remember correctly the fish was 81 or 82 pounds and someone with Daves experience can tell the difference between a 80 pounder and a 65 pounder with one eye closed and looking into the sun![]()
