Fished today on our 35' Cabo the Kelsey Boy and went 2 for 3 on whites. Both fish were gut hooked and probably would have died so we brought both back for the table. Has anyone else had trouble with gut hooked whites on trebles?
It was a beautiful day out on the water and had to deal with a lot of traffic out there but one of our banner days this year. Hopefully we'll get out again next week.
treble hooks???? What were you using for bait? Eels? If I ever gut hook a fish freshwater or saltwater I cut the hook, be gentle as I can, and pray the fish lives. The fish has zero chance on the table.
You do realize that the rules for areas where you just may hook a Marlin require circle hooks on natural baits?
You might also ask who on this forum has ever used treble hooks on trolling baits offshore. A sensible captain would not want a Tuna or Mahi in the cockpit with trebles trying to catch the mate in a painful part.
I suggest you hire a professional mate with experience to teach you the proper way to fish offshore. You are not Bluefishing out there.
let me know what they taste like I always wanted to go to the food bank after the WMO to see if I could get some Blue and White Marlin for the grill just to see what it taste like.
White Marlin are great smoked. Trebles are no different than fishing J-Hooks. We just rig them as you would a circle hook, right in front of the small ballyhoo. You just don't have to drop back to them as long. I promise your hook up ratio will increase. Tight lines fellas!
