What's the verdict on the new style narrower reels like the VSX? Seems as if they would have better balance and be better suited to stand up than the wider VSWs.

Flat out Awesome!!! Particularily the 16VSX that we've caught big-eyes on and sword fish, let alone hundreds of yellowfin on jigs.
The 130VSX are also excellant - we've fought 50 bluefins in the 350-650 pound range on our 4 130VSX since last year and have not touched the reels yet for service.
We also use the 50VSX but it is almost overkill for anything less than 100 pounds when the 16VSX serves the bill. We've will be using 30VSXs next year on all chunking gear as this reel seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Thanks CR, what line / top shot setup will you use for the 30s for chunking? Loking to use them for trolling/chunking in mid atlantic.
Vinny,
Your thoughts on this?![]()
I used the 50 VSX and could not be happier. I loaded them up with 130 Jerry Brown Spectra and a used a Basil 80 lb top shot. You get alittle over 500 total yards of line on the reel . This set-up is awesome.... It does short work of 80-100 lb tuna and I also had a 273 lb Thresher in 30 minutes. I highly recommend the new V- Series Penn's and the narrow VSX Reels have higher drag pressure. The narrow VSX style is better balanced on the rod (No side to side torque). The 30's also do a awesome job....Give them a try,I am sure you will not regret it... Remember one thing .... Made in the U.S.A. Look out Japan, we are coming to get back at you again..![]()

As Adam said these reels are awesome . We have hanothing but great things to say about them . If there is one flaw it would be the clips on the side of the reel as sometimes freespooling it gets caught on them. We use the stiffer rod for chunking and have had great succes with white marlin fishing putting them on the smaller graphite rods. These reels can pretty much catch anything from big bluefin to blue marlin as we had a couple last year in the bahamas on the 16's.
