My MXL's have landed YFT up to 60lbs (have not tied into any larger yet), sails, white marlin. wahoo, kings, cobia, grouper, snapper, pretty much anything the GOM can throw at you less big marlin or big makos (they have performed well on too many of those toothy stinkers up to 7'). have them rigged with 85lb braid. (forgot to add AJ's in the 40 lb class and had larger ones but mono to braid connections failed on three in a row as the knot hit the first guide on the rod... ) The JX would be a better fit for 50 lb + tuna or the larger one, LX)

I must say, it is a reel that I would grab first if I had to grab one outfit for a day on the water. I would think for stripers, they would be fine.

I went single speed (6.3:1) because the thought was to use them solely for high speed jigging. I sure wish on the tuna, the gears were different, but they work and work fine. Great reels and I would buy them again if I had to (I might buy 2 more with the lower ratio, but I sure like the speed for jigging).

Have them on extra heavy trevalas.

And have two Fin Nor OS65's on heavy trevala's... all of these are excellent setups for here.

the thing that i love about the Avet reels are the size. they are considerably smaller than other reels of comparative strength and capacity. ultimately, it translates into more comfortable fishing throughout the day. For your needs, consider the MXL spooled with your braid of choice or if you're worried about it, step up to the JX. You can get about 500 yards of 50lb braid on the MXL and for it's size, it can more than handle most anything out there. anything more than the JX might be overkill. the LX has nearly 1000 yard capacity of 40lb braid and almost 500 yards of 65lb, if you feel that you really need to beef it up. but again, i bet you'd be fine with a MXL or JX.

marlinmate, try J&H closeouts. they have the LX in orange, i believe. also search ebay. they usually have a decent selection, although J&H is one of the main sellers on there.

I have a few Avets - MXL, SX and EXW 4/0's - and absolutely love them, for many of the reasons already stated.

I use the MXL on almost everything, except haven't used it on tuna yet. It dominates striped bass but is still super small. It really is a versatile reel and a lot of fun to fish with. It is awesome for casting too. The EXW 4/0's are perfect for chunking and trolling tuna IMO, great drag range, smooth, good capacity and durable. If you do get into a big fish, you would have a good chance with this reel.

If you wanted one rod for everything, as many stated here, go with the JX or LX. More drag and capacity then the MXL to help you handle tuna (assuming you use braid backing 65 or 80 lb with a topshot), yet still small enough that it isn't too cumbersome for stripers. LX I believe is just a wider JX, same drag etc.

I have the JX with the Trevala TVC-60H rod. I think it works great we got yellowfin up to 80# on it with no problems.
