Question what makes a great charter capt.

what makes a charter capt one of the best out there? is it that he can find fish or that he has heart for what he does.

TOP TEN SIGNS YOU'VE BOOKED WITH A GREAT CHARTER CAPTAIN:

1.) He shows up late, but convinces you he's early.

2.) He asks if you've brought him coffee, and if you say "no" he somehow convinces you to give him yours.

3.) He yells at his deckhands at least once before you've even left the dock. And no, he doesn't need a valid reason.

4.) He complains about the coffee, and gives you that look that says - "Huh...no donuts?!?!?!"

5.) When you eventually get around to fishing, he tells you about all of the fish they've been catching lately. "Lately" means during the course of his entire career.

6.) If for some reason you aren't getting any action, he'll blame it on his rookie deckhands, and usually starts yelling again.

7.) If you are catching fish he'll take all the credit, and will usually yell at the deckhands. No, he doesn't need a valid reason.

8.) He'll ask you if you have any daughters, and if they're in college yet.

9.) Depending on your previous answer he'll then ask you if they are in town on vacation with you.

10.) Depending on your previous two answers he'll then ask you if you'd like to come over to his place for a fish fry and pool party, and then query as to what time you usually go to bed.

I AM GOING TO RE-PHRASE YOUR COOL TOPIC IN ORDER TO RENDER MY THOUGHTS ...I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND

    A GREAT CAPTAIN SHOULD:

    1. HAVE A FEW YEARS IN THE PIT PRIOR THE LICNESE. NOT 6 MONTHS...THAT MEANS A FEW YEARS RIGGING EXPERIENCE UNDER THE BELT AS WELL

    2. HE COOL UNDER FIRE/PRESSURE. THIS IS NOT ACQUIRED. THIS IS GOD GIVEN.

    3. HE MUST BE AN ABLE MAN UNDER THE HOOD. WHEN THE CRAP GOES SOUTH IN THE BOILER ROOM A CAPTAIN SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH SAVVY AND KNOWLEDGE TO FIX THE OBVIOUS...... AND DO IT WITHOUT SCARING THE GENERAL SALON POPULATION HALF TO DEATH WHILE DOING SO.

    4. ANY HUMAN CAN DRIVE A BOAT. A PRO CAPTAIN SHOULD BE ABLE TO FISH A BOAT.

    5. I LIKE TO SEE MY CAPTAIN ATTENTIVE 24/7 AT THE HELM....ALWAYS LOOKING AROUND...NEVER SEEING HIS FEET PROPPED UP ON THE CONSOLE.....WHEN I SEE THE FEET GO TO THE CONSOLE...I KNOW THAT WHEN HE IS IN THIS HALF COCKED POSITION, HIS VISION IS LIMITED TO ABOUT 190 DEGREES. THE BOSS I FISH WITH NEVER SITS....NEVER. IT'S NOT EVEN IN THE CARDS TO SIT....HELL HE EVEN TOOK THE LADDER BACK OFF HIS CHAIR.

    6. WHEN TH BITE IS HOT HOT KISS HOTTER THAN HELL.....A CAPTAIN SHOULD BE ABLE TOO RUN 3 LINES OFF THE BRIDGE AND MAINTAIN 2 TEASERS NOT TO MENTION TURN ON A DIME SIZE BAIT BALL AND NOT SPILL HIS MT DEW WHILE DOING SO

    7. I LIKE A CAPTAIN THAT HAS ALREADY GONE UNDER THE HOOD FOR HIS DAILY ROUTINE CHECK PRIOR THE PARTY ARRIVING.

    8. I LIKE A CAPTAIN WHO GIVES ME PERIODIC TEMP/LOCALE/DEPTH BRIEFING THROUGHOUT THE DAY......WHY YOU ASK? BECAUSE I SIMPLY LOVE THIS GAME THAT'S WHY.

    9. WHILE IT IS NOT REQUIRED OR EXPECTED...IT IS COOL WHEN A CAPTAIN CHIPS IN WITH SOME BOAT CLEANING. ESPECIALLY ON THOSE DAYS THAT HIS MATE HUMPED HARD FOR HIM. THE BOSS I WORK FOR DOES HALF THE BOAT MINIMUM EVERYDAY........MAKES ME A LUCKY GUY DOESN'T IT.....

    10. A GOOD CAPITANO NEVER CORRECTS HIS MATE IN FRONT OF THE PARTY.....HE DOES THIS AWAY FROM THE PARTY.

    11. A GREAT CAPTAIN ALWAYS PREPS AHEAD OF TIME....A MATE SHOULD DO THE SAME.

I COULD GO ON & ON WITH ANOTHER 100 OR SO MORE THOUGHTS HERE BUT THESE ARE A FEW & THEY ARE JUST MY THOUGHTS. I'VE BEEN IN THE PIT A LONG TIME...3 FULL TIME AND THE REST WHERE FREE-LANCE...AND EVERY MAN IS NATURALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER. NOT ALL ARE GREAT.

GREAT IS A LARGE WORD....A HUGE WORD....GREAT IS DEFINED AS .....FROM PINFISH TO BILLFISH.....FROM TROUT TO TUNAS.....FROM OIL TO BROKEN FUEL LINES.....GREAT IS RARE....GREAT IS A SMILE ON A BAD DAY...GREAT IS TOTAL PACKAGE.

I HAVE FISHED WITH, BUT ONE TOTAL PACKAGE. THAT PACKAGE MAKES ME LOOK GOOD.....NOT GREAT....JUST GOOD. AT 59.....GOOD AIN'T BAD

I like fishing for a captain who will try as many new ideas or tricks as I do when our usual routine is not producing results. I have worked the pit for a few guys who just stick to their guns and not try anything new. All i want to do is head to a new spot, or try a new speed, but I am not the one in charge, so I can only change the things that I control....sometimes I get lucky, and sometimes I have needed the help from the bridge....

Like box said, i really like communicating with my Cap's about water breaks, depth, bait, etc..... It all helps my plan of attack at the back of the boat. I think a cockpit screen would make me pretty darn happy in most cases.
