You don't need much braid at all on a dredge rod as it won't be out very far (50-100 yds is more than enough). I just use mono backing--- 100 lb.
I attach Braid and backing with a SPRO, but I guess any connection will do in this instance. I use a rod and not a downrigger.

Akes had 100 yard spools of black 400# braid specifically made for downriggers last season. Since I use the DR for both the planer and the dredge it's a good way to go.

    Bert,
Can you tell me where you get the 400 lb braid?
    Thanks.

Another question...i'm using the downrigger in a rod holder with the swivel base and turning it out 90 degrees when pulling the dredge. It's a Penn Fathom Master. Do you ever have a problem with two much drag on the swivel base causing it to snap back? That happened the other day but I think maybe we just got moving a little too fast going down sea and it put too much pressure on the base.
Dump the swivel base when pulling the dredge and mount the downrigger directly to the quick mount (rod holder mount).

Most guys I fish with use wirebacking and 200lb braid on downriggers and 130lb+ hollowcore with a 150lb mono topshot for their rods for this usage.
