somehow that sounds right but I am in no way sure.

some kind of chub maybe?
This a strange one, and I wonder whether it's not a species endemic to Hawaii (if that is where it is from).
The body shape, mouth and tail rule out a chub, and a Hawaiian chub looks very different : and they make great ulua live-bait too.....
In some respects this fish has some characteristics of a slender pomfret, and some of a barrelfish or butterfish. It is the latter family of fish I'm betting this fella originates from. Looks like a deepwater fish anyway, as I'm darned if I can find a photo of a free-swimming one on the web !
With that mouth, I wonder if it's a jellyfish eater ?
Nice find, Alan. Looks like a salema too, which I see is one of its alternative names. That's what the coloration reminded me of, too.
Here's a link to some info if anyone is interested.
The two species of this family seem quite different to the rest of the kyphosidae, such as the Bermuda chub. I wonder what they taste like ?

Deepwater barrel-fish indeed. Haarumph.....

Definately isn't a pompano dolphin (dorado). My boss currently holds the all tackle for them.
