    They shouldn't be swinging at a fish in the first place. But what I've noriced about top shots that I like has nothing to do with the hook at all. I like the lightweight fiberglass handle. When you gaff a big shark,etc. It flexes withthe fish and doesn't bend like the Aftco gaffs. But the hooks on them i can do without. If you gaff a mahi,wahoo,or tuna with the smaller models...it looks like to shot it with a 12 gauge. They seem to ruin too much meat on an unperfect gaff shot. And I'm sure none of you has ever gaffed a fish in the meat by accident.

    The fiberglass handle is the key to me although I know longer have my topshots I have some 50-60 dollar range gaffs with the same hook as teh Aftco but with light fiberglass handles and I love them. Instead of being stuck to the fish with an unbending piece of metal you have a flexible pole in your hand that keeps you from getting beat up by the fish as bad if they surge.
