Torrential rain....Howling onshore winds and a marginal forecast, not the perfect ingredients for a Ladies fishing comp. Luckily the organisers had a spare day up their sleeves and put the comp back a day. We made the call on thursday that we were going no matter what. Even if it meant we had to bash out to stevies for a snapper, I had spent the last two weekends at home and that was enough for me.
Arriving at Whangaroa the harbour had glassed off and things were looking a bit better so after a beer or 6 we hit the hay excited about what Saturday would bring. FOG and lots of it. we couldnt even see the next pier down at the marina. No wind lets get out there. Well how things can change. We had a lazy windswell with bugger all wind..... its gonna be a goodun!(d)
Lures in the water and we were doing it. it didnt take long for a whack on the super plunger in close which popped the flatline. straight after there is a huge detonation on the short rigger and the 80 is howling. This fish emptied the 80 and with 100m back we lost weight....bugger! we think it was a big tuna but who knows.
As we worked our way south to where we had all the action on the last trip we soon had another fish on the super plunger and he moved back and smashed the zuker before taking to the air. he would have spent close to 5 mins putting on a great show.
during this time we kind of forgot about clearing the gear and just enjoyed the show.
Zara settled into the fight and we soon had the fish to the boat....Tail wrapped but still kicking we chucked a tag in it and spent 5 mins reviving it before letting it go. Awesome. What a start to the comp! we called it the standard 90kg![]()
Lures in and about 45 minutes later the broadbill lumo on the other rigger goes off. Zara(our only lady anger) was a bit pooped from the first fish so Deanastepped up.
this fish didnt show itself and dug deep for 30 mins before we got colour.
It was coming up but it was DOA so we gaffed it and brought it aboard, it was a nice fish that later pulled the scales down to 133.7kg and would have won us the calcutta($5200) if Deana didnt have a chopper:Cool_087: and the comittee didnt disqualify us from the calcutta for some shit that i still dont quite understand but thats irrelvant... we had the biggest fish for the boat and Deano was stoked. (d)
not to mention a much much better hookup rate and our first 2 fish day for the year. I got stuck into the beers and the crew of non drinkers had a couple of cokes :Cool_653:
That was it for us on day one, almost..... apparently we were not the only boat to have a fish caught by a guy in the womens comp so there was a wee bit of punishment...... U like
Day two and a sloppier sea saw us tacking north a wee way before the run down, a slow morning started to fire around 10 when boat after boat were hooking up. where were our fish? it was bedlam out there with probably close to 40+ boats working a small area. Major tom obviously had issues with his glasses as he narrowly missed out long rigger and went straight over the shotgun which luckily had a big heavy lure on so was well underwater:Cool_087: |he got the one fingered salute
Throughout the day boats continued to battle stripeys in this small area and was stoked to hear/see my mate Frankie get her first fish aboard Ultimate game
after a brief play around a log trying to extract some Mahi's we turned and headed for home right as the westerly started whistling across the coast making for a bumpy ride home in about the only sea the cat doesn't like.
Another awesome trip aboard UWANNAGO and I am truly gutted I miss out on Houhora and the 3 kings next week but for once work has to come first![]()
