Well noaa was wrong again as they blew the forcast for fri in A good way!We arrived at the 28mile wreck area after A 45mph run out to the grounds, arrived to our spot about 1.5hours early to take A look see.
We where about 41miles off when we finally found our location. We had steady action all day with 9 blue sharks to about 150lbs and A 80-100lb mako release. The highlight of the day came when it started raining about 12:00 and Brian said whats that in the slick!
I jumped up and yelled mako in the slick!
it was A 170-180lb class fish maybe more but we will never know,as Robbie pitched A bait to it and handed the rod off to Lew lew tryed setting the hook and the fish dove and the line parted! we just looked at each other in disbelief.
A few minutes after that we had another mako 50' from the boat doing summersaults about 10-15ft out of the water he did about 4-5 of these and disapeared.About 2:00pm again in the rain we where working on getting A blue dog to the boat as we released it another rod that was just under the boat took off and some of my crew saw the fish it was A nice mako def well over 200lbs as I set the hook and handed it off to Bob the next angler in line for the fight.I raised the motors as the fish steamed towards them with no will to stop and luckily I got the motors up in time, cleared all the lines got the gaff ready at boatside and as I was ready to start the motors to run the fish down he turned towards the boat, down to 1/4line or less on the spool Bob was told to reel like hell the fish is coming at the boat!!!!He couldent keep up and the fish was lost!
A real heartbreaker for sure.
The end of our day one was upon us as they called lines out. Lew and I spent half the night rigging and cutting off chafed line to insure we wouldent lose the potential winning fish for tomorrow. As day 2 was upon us we had our spot as we went the same place as day one,WHO WOULDENT? LOL.We saw A nice thresher jump on the way out in the vicinity of wildwood reef site. But upon getting to our location the bite had changed and was non existent as A matter of fact NO fish where caught by us on day two.The wind had changed and wasnt pushing us in the right direction I believe. On day one the wind was pushing the boat NE on day two the wind was pushing the boat SW much different when the fish are moving N.The water temps where 61.7-62.6 the mako seemed to be in the 62.5 degree water as I believe that there was more bait prevelant in that water. We did not catch A bluefish at all during this tournament.
