i have learned from some guys around and from deep also that you want to drift of as much structure, ledges and bait as possible..

i started out on the sw corner of the glory and had a drift over some structure i have scouted out there and also over the ledges.. went from flats, to drop off, to flat, to drop off, to flats..

a several mile drift is not out of line at all!! you got the right idea!! sometimes if you got a good drift over good structure i will go back to the beginning of my slick and drift back thru it!! but if not you can pick up and run anywhere!! if the missles are there as deep says. lol

    you will catch em!

Did I drift too long? Should I have kept drifting over structure by picking up and moving like fluke fishing? or do you think that it was just a case of the fish being inshore a bit? Once the slick is established I hate to leave it, I always feel that we are leaving just a Mr Mako is coming up the slick.
I am interested in everyone's thoughts on this as well.... I have pondered the same thing.

First of all that drift looked pretty good to me - in a great area, went right by a tremendous structure, then had a wind or current shift and drifted right on to a big offshore wreck. Definitely put yourself in position to catch a real big one. A lot of the really big makos I have heard of being caught (and lost) out of our inlet were right where you were.

My own 2 cents.... I put way, way more stock in being in the right spot then staying with a slick. I will move immediately if I feel we are in an unproductive area. Levaing a slick doesn't bother me at all, and personally I think people put way too much stock in it. Another thing I don't get is when people flip out when a boat crosses their slick a mile away... I don't think it matters in the least. I am not talking about someone coming right up on you - but your slick has sunk far enough and the oil is still all over the place, sharks aren't going to lose the scent because a boat went by on the surface. I think they are attracted to boats more then spooked by them.

I just personally feel like it is better to be in the right spot. How many makos do you catch right on the structure you are fishing, rather then far away from it? For me the vast majority are right on the structure, so if I don't feel good about the drift I won't wait long to go back to more structure.

As I said ... Pretty much a non issue. The boat owner has a business relationship next door and has some special deal worked there but when I'm driving I fuel at Hoffmans. As for not knowing me, he should... I have fished out of there a few times in the last year and fueled there a couple times too.

Nah... I'm too heated for that. Best to let the law people deal with it properly... In real serious situations a mature calm cool head is really a whole lot more effective than just going Deep on someone... I don't need to hurt someone or their machine and get a record because of it. Since this guy is most certainly off his rocker it would have the potential of escallating into something uglier than I care to deal with in a hurry...
