    WBS Grand Championships, Los Suenos

Well, Day One of the WBS Grand Championships is underway with a pretty strong marlin bite and more sailfish than expected so far. As of 11:50AM Costa Rica time, there have been 28 billfish releases including 10 marlin (blues, blacks and stripes).

As of right now, Louisiana's Scott Cooper is currently in the lead with 800 points (two marlin releases). SFC.com's Bill Pino (Squidnation) is in second with 600 points (one marlin and two sails). Andy Levy (Whitey) pulled the hook on a marlin just before 10AM.

The weather is absolutely gorgeous, flat calm seas and light winds. The fish have been pushing off around 40 or so miles from the docks, but the sailfish are in a bit closer in the blended water. We're having a hard time getting photos up but I'll try to keep everyone updated from here.

WBS Grand Championships Day 1 Update

WBS GRAND CHAMPIONSHIPS NOW UNDERWAY IN COSTA RICA

    November 6th, 2007

Los Sueños, Costa Rica--Day One of the World Billfish Series Grand Championships from the incredible Los Suenos Resort and Marina on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is under way this morning. Twenty-three boats left the marina at 7AM sharp, as forty-six of the world’s best anglers compete for the title of World Champion of Billfishing as well as the keys to a new Mercedes Benz automobile, a custom Gevril chronograph, the gold champion’s ring and the Grander Marlin bronze trophy by marine artist Geoffrey Smith. Beautiful weather and calm seas are expected for the Thursday and Friday qualifying event, as well as Saturday’s final round shoot-out among the top five anglers, which will determine the winner of the Championship.

Fishing action early in the week has resulted in excellent numbers of blue, black and striped marlin releases along with quite a few big Pacific sailfish, which should make for an extremely exciting event. The tournament features an all-release format with sails worth 100 points and any species of marlin worth 400 points. Competitors are required by Costa Rican law to use non-offset circle hooks in conjunction with any natural baits or bait/lure combinations.

The WBS Championship field is comprised of five past World Champions, including Karl Knudsen (2006, 1998), Mark Wodlinger (2004), Scott Rickert (2003), Terry Tri (1992, 1993, 1996) and Richard Richardson (1995). In addition to the past Champions, there are numerous top division winners and top anglers from WBS events around the world in attendance. Each angler must qualify through their tournament performance in order to receive an invitation to this prestigious event.

Wednesday night’s reception party and angler’s meeting was extremely well received. The award-winning staff from Barrett Productions has once again joined the WBS to film this incredible week of tournament fishing. Camera crews will be matched throughout the week with competitors to record the action as it happens.

Check for tournament updates on www.FishWBS.com for up-to-date action from beautiful Costa Rica.

The 2PM update from Los Suenos has Scotty Cooper still in first place with 800 points but Jay Blount has moved into second with another marlin release and 800 points. Mainor Oporto is in third with 700 points followed by Bob del Vecchio in fourth with 600 points and Terry Tri in fifth with 600 points.

There are 42 releases by 2PM Costa Rica time including 14 marlin releases.

We should be able to upload some photos by later this afternoon.
