I can usally get some shots of the billfish jumping from quite a distance and then I will switch lenses to the 18-55 for the shots close to the boat. There is a lense 18-200 that would ommit the lense switch which can be a pain in the ass especially in a hard reverse with water everywhere.
I've got that 18-200 VR coming my way for xmas. I'm told it suffers from a little lens creep, but I can't wait to see how the VR holds up on the water.

Finally had a chance to check out some of the photos we shot during the Championship from the chase boat. These were done with a Nikon D40 set in sports mode.

I really like the backing-down shots. Here's 1st Strike flooding the cockpit. Impressive to see a 74 Viking dance like this one:
