    wahoo sickness

I had Mahi-Mahi Monday night for dinner. I had Wahoo Tuesday night for dinner. I had Yellow Fin Tuna Wednesday night for dinner. Last night I had Mako and a little Wahoo blackened for dinner. Tonight I will eat Mako and lobster claws and tails for dinner. I've been eating my normal scrapple egg and cheese sandwich every morning and a bananna or two before lunch and I still hit the toilet once in the morning and once in the evening.....So I don't know about the poisining. Mayne it bothers some peoples stomachs more than others. That's like the mercury level warnings in Rockfish (Stripped Bass) to the northern guys, anyway traditionally in the month of March and April, I know in our house we eat Rockfish 3 or 4 nights a week, cause its fresh and free!!! Oh well personally, I think the government curves some of these warnings to protect the fish stocks from people who like to eat it. Don't get me worng, I understand the whole mercury in the blood line senario, but I still take what the government says most of the time with a grain of salt. I don't know about you folks but both of my grandfathers and even my great grandfather ate fish pretty much every nite when it was available, and one lived until 79, the other until 95 and my other grandfather is still kicking at 86 and eats raw clams, oysters and a sh*t load of rockfish...... so maybe it is just unique to each person's individual metabolism. Who cares, I am still gonna eat it. Just drink a beer with it and a shot of burboun every once in a while and you'll be fine.

I think Ct Capt and a couple of others hit the nail on the head when he said that the commercials haven't figured out how to catch big numbers of wahoos (thank God!) other than rod and reel "pin hookers" who fish them with rod and reel and for the most part sell them to local restaurants and fish markets. I'm all for pin hooking. Use to do it myself and I think it's a shame that so many states don't allow it. Among other things, it would be far better for local economies than those caught by the commercials, especially the foreign ones that invade our waters. Yes, there are some deep, cold water species that don't lend themselves to rod and reel commercial fishing, but species like wahoo, dorado and tuna sure would work for we privateers.

As for the fish store, I have to guess that the guy couldn't get quality wahoo, or wahoo at all, from his supplier, but made up a bunch of bullshit about the fact.

Years ago when I was back in New Jersey I stopped by a seafood store and noticed a special they were having on swordfish...only the fish in the case wasn't swordfish, it was mako. And believe me, it is easy to tell the difference. When I pointed this out to the manager he started on a big tirade and song and dance about how long he had been selling fish and that this was swordfish and not mako. I said, "have it your way. I'm going to do a little shopping next door and then I'm coming back and if you still have that swordfish sign on the mako I'm going to drop a dime on you. I understand that there are major penalties and fines for miss-labeling food products, pal."

I went back and sure enough, the sign had been changed. I said to the manager, who was giving me major stink eye at the time, "Nice going there, coach! What'd you do, read a book or something?" and I left.

I guess it's human nature for some to try to b.s. others. I have eaten countless meals of wahoo and have never had a problem of any kind, except for stuffing myself to the gills on it!

And those pompano? One of the best eating fish on the planet! Cabo was loaded with huge ones and nobody but us fished for them.

If I had to substitute a barby fish it would be either mako or thresher.
