    Aaron,

As I read this I think, "nobody's saying anything because nobody's been going". Conventional wisdom (which is wide spread and common and often wrong, but nobody goes out and proves it) says it's too early.

I haven't been out either. And I'm not even from your coast, let alone your area. But a thresher shark is a thresher shark and a mako is a mako. Based on what I know about those species, I'd surely go sharkin' right now in your waters and that would consist of trolling, not chumming, around bait concentrations close to the beach, green water preferred, for threshers. And if there are bluefish around, I wouldn't be surprised at all to nail a mako or two on the troll if I fished around the blues - which will likely be around that bait I wrote about above.

Trolling for sharks? Har, har, har, eh? Laugh all you want, but it's a GREAT way to catch the game sharks and eliminate the garbage ones and the dogfish and the blues...and it is hands down THE best way to catch threshers. I wouldn't have written a book about it if it weren't true.

Anyhoo, that's some "crazy" input from a guy who has done more than his share of shark fishing...and catching.

Good luck, no matter how you go about it or where.

Not to many that i'm aware of that do the traditional chum in the water shark fishing outta VA like in the northeast. Most makos caught are bycatch while trolling for tuna and many are on the smaller size. Water temps around triangles 100' is in the high 50's to low 60's further out 40-50 fa the temps drop some. It may be a little early but you won't know till you try. Aaron what port do you fish from
    good luck

2 weeks ago I overnighted on the break off VB...all the blue sharks you could crank. Another boat last weekend got into the blue sharks too but also a mako. Whatever the reason, that break is just loaded in blue sharks.
