I actually had the pleasure of fishing with Capt. Steve a few years back when he was running the After Midnight in Mazatlan. After going a few hours without a fish (and being the good NC boy that I am), I asked if they had anything that resembled a blue and white Ilander onboard. I dug through tackle lockers until I found one of only two blue and white lures they had, then fired that sucker out to the top of the halyard on the long rigger. The conversation went something like this:

Capt. Steve: "Hey, that looks just like a flying fish on that wave back there. Looks bitchen." (They actually say bitchen in Cali).
Me: "Are you seeing any fliers around?"
Capt: "Nope. Good luck."

About 30 minutes later he yells down, "Billfish, left long--he ate it!?!?"

Five minutes later, one Pacific sailfish released. Here's the lure:

Steve's without a doubt one of the most experienced and professional captains around, and his tournament record proves it. To hear him talk about his days on the swordboat, harpooning fish then chasing the gear around on radar, he's truly been there and done that when it comes to fishing the SoCal/Baja waters. I hope to cross paths with him again soon--I still owe him a beer or six for that sail.

great interview John.

There is more knowledge needed, than heading to a temp break. A spread pattern and dancing ballywho are a part of the whole picture. Location of structure, bait, temp, and other complexities are so important in completing the hunt. A captains complex way to approach a day of hunting specific game fish is over looked many a day when reading a fishing report. I find the interview most interesting. Tournament captains are a special breed. Thanks guys for the video interview.....flat
