KODIAK -- A fishing vessel found to be in violation of safety procedures and illegally in possession of a shark fin on Monday was sent to port from its location about 30 miles northeast of Kodiak, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
A Coast Guard crew from the cutter Acushnet boarded the Arctic Wave on Monday afternoon and found the shark fin hanging from the vessel's rigging. Having a shark fin but no carcass is a violation of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1996, the Coast Guard said.
A further inspection revealed there were too few immersion suits on the vessel, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard terminated the fishing trip and escorted the Arctic Wave back to Kodiak, where its captain was able to get an ample supply of suits. After completing an inspection, the vessel was allowed to continue its voyage.
