venice report

got a wild hair this weekend, loaded up the boat and headed for dauphin island. we left about 12:00 at night and were going to fish at night and the next morning. we got about ten min from the house and one of my buddies said "hey lets just go to venice", which is only about three hours away. the truck got silent for a min, and we all said ok lets go. so off to venice we went. after stopping for gas food, and what ever else supplies we needed, we arrived at venice marina around 4:30 am. we put the boat in the water and headed out of tiger pass for the midnight lump for our first stop. got to the north cliff of the lump and started a drift across the top of the lump from north to south. we put out a couple of live hard tails to drag behind the boat and started jigging. the first couple of drops turned up some king mackeral, and bonito. after about twenty min of that we got to the aj's. from then on it was one after the other until we got tired of catching them. all aj were between 30 and 60 lbs. most were caught on butterfly jigs, but a few were caught on the hardtails. from there we went towards the mississippi canyon for bluer water and something else. put out some dolphin candy and started trolling a nice rip that turned up one small wahoo. while trolling we started to see the water churning a couple hundred yards away and birds diving. we headed straight over and started casting plugs and big grubs. caught several black fin and bonito. the best thing was watching about a 150lb yellow fin hit a bonito at the surface and come about five feet into the air, with the bonito hanging out of his mouth. once we saw that we started chunking, only to catch more blackfin. left there and went to a big rig for some deep water dropping that produced some gags and more ajs. in all we landed 13aj, 12 black fin, 4 gags, 4 kings, and 5 lesser ajs. venice was totally awesome and i cant wait to go back. will have more pics from trip soon, waiting on an e-mail with them.

Good catchin Treyfry. Never gets old seeing Tunas air out on bait. Seeing the Bone in mouth sounds even better. Thanks for the report.

Cool

Good catch Trey!!
Have any problems with those rare RED SNAPPER?
I hear they sometimes show up and steal your bait!!
Good lookin blue water! You must have been tired on your way back, or did you stop somewhere to rest up? That's a heck of a drive for a last minute decision.
Glad you had a good trip!
One of these days I'll be able to head out alongside you.
Til then best wishes
