Ran two overnight trips out of VB this weekend. Fishing was off from what it should be this time of year. The fleet from OI and the longliners had a tough go of it as well .. Sat/Sun we had the Rich Alverado group out .. we ran down the point area, starting around the 590 line on a nice break. We worked the area hard .. our first bite being a small mako that ate a 9" purple squid bar. Our next bite was a nice 50lb yellowfin that ate a green machine bar and our last bite for the day was a screamer that ate a Braid Marauder. Unfortunately, the fish was lost when the line parted (it was a rod brought by one of the guys in the group and the line may have been old) .. we set up on the warm side for the night and made a few drift with no action, so I moved right into the break for our last drift. We had fast paced action with a smorgasbord of sharks until picking up to troll for a few hours. On the the troll in the am , we managed two gaffer dolphin on a purple jet to round out the trip. We ran back to Rudee and did the turnaround, this time with the John Flood group, starting further north around the 650 line. It was nearly dark when we arrived to the grounds, so we went right to the chunk. Again sharks were readily available , with three makos, a hammerhead and a brown making their way to the boat for release plus a few more bite offs. We again made a few moves during the night, marking fish occasionally, but no tuna or swords. The word from the 5 longline boats in the area was fishing was very poor with only an occasional decent set. Up on the troll in the am , we again found ourselves mixed right in with the OI fleet. The bite was very slow with most boats choosing to fish for dolphin. We stuck with the tuna and worked offshore to 700-800 fathoms before getting our first bite. A smaller yellowfin ate the green machine bar. About an hour later we got a second shot with four rods going off .. a mamba bar, two skirted ballys and a naked bally. We pulled one off, had short bite on the bally and landed two. We finished it up with no more bites for the day. All in all, the fishing was disappointing .. the sharks provided action, but the quality of the makos were small. The yellowfin was very scattered to non existent for many . It should improve with the longliners fishing to the south starting to see more fish on each set ...
