USCG EPIRB NOTICE. Effective 1 Jan. 2007

This is an email that i received this morning....

    DATE: December 08, 2006 13:47:51 EST
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOATERS MUST NOT OPERATE 121.5/243 MHZ EPIRBs AFTER 31 DECEMBER
    2006

WASHINGTON - The Coast Guard reminds all boaters that beginning January 1, 2007, both 121.5 and 243 MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) are prohibited from use in both commercial and recreational watercraft. Boaters wishing to have an emergency rescue beacon aboard their vessel must have a digital 406 MHz model.

The January 1, 2007, date to stop using 121.5 MHz EPIRBs is in preparation for February 1, 2009, when satellite processing of distress signals from all 121.5/243 MHz beacons will terminate. Following this termination date, only the 406 MHz beacons will be detected by the International Cospas-Sarsat Satellite System which provides distress alert and location data for search and rescue operations around the world.

The regulation applies to all Class A, B, and S 121.5/243 MHz EPIRBs. It does not affect 121.5/243 MHz man overboard devices which are designed to work directly with a base alerting unit only and not with the satellite system.
This change, in large part, was brought about by the unreliability of the 121.5/243 MHz beacons in an emergency situation. Data reveals that with a 121.5 MHz beacon, only one alert out of every 50 is a genuine distress situation. This has a significant effect on expending the limited resources of search and rescue personnel and platforms. With 406 MHz beacons, false alerts have been reduced significantly, and, when properly registered, can usually be resolved with a telephone call to the beacon owner.
Consequently, real alerts can receive the attention they deserve.
When a 406 MHz beacon signal is received, search and rescue personnel can retrieve information from a registration database. This includes the beacon owner's contact information, emergency contact information, and vessel/aircraft identifying characteristics. Having this information allows the Coast Guard, or other rescue personnel, to respond appropriately.

In the U.S., users are required by law to directly register their beacon in the U.S. 406
MHz Beacon Registration Database at: http://www.beaconregistration.noaa.gov/ or by calling 1-888-212-SAVE. Other users can register their beacon in their country's national beacon registration database or, if no national database is available, in the
International Beacon Registration Database at https://www.406registration.com/.
The United States Coast Guard is the lead agency for coordinating national maritime search and rescue policy and is responsible for providing search and rescue services on, under and over assigned international waters and waters subject to United States jurisdiction.

It may not be as bad as I thought. I did a little research since I forwarded that email to almost any one I knew or had an email address to and now my customers are asking me questions. I can't comfortable answer so I want the right answer!

It looks like the past couple of years are fine. I feel comfortable in saying at least 05 and current are fine they work on both systems the 406 and 121.5.

BY NO MEANS AM I SAYING NOT TO CHECK YOU’RE EPRIBS!! BE SAFE AND CHECK THEM!

I have an email in to ACR and my distributor to find out what the right answers are to ease some aggravation for people!

    I will keep you updated!

PS. I have EPRIBS on sale till the end of January ...LOL Sorry I had to add a little humor!

If any one wants the information I receive emailed to them PM me your email address and I will get it out to you

    Hope this helps!

This is what I received VIA email today......

Attached is a copy of the latest USCG Notice prohibiting the use of Class A & B Beacons in 2007.

    To address your question;
ACR class "B" beacons (121.5MHz frequency) were sold from 1977 through 2005 (and probably in 2006 by some retailers).
ACR 406MHz Beacons have been sold since 1988; so you really shouldn't work from a date.

    It's this statement from the USCG that states the facts;
"Beginning 1/1/07, boater's wishing to have an emergency rescue beacon aboard must have a digital 406MHz model".

    ACR 406MHz model names include:
    • RLB-23
    • Satellite 406
    • Satellite2 406
    • RapidFix 406
    • GlobalFix 406
    • GyPSI 406 PLB
    • AquaFix 406 PLB

    Hope this helps,

    Ron

PS: FYI......406MHz beacons use 121.5MHz as a homing frequency for Search & Rescue while the 406MHz frequency is the transmission that sends the satellite detectable digital data burst.

Do you know whay you want?

    Auto on Manual release?
    Global or Sat2?

Global has faster acqusition and is aprox $300.00 more than SAT2, not a big difference in price between auto or manual.
