From what I understand there was a fatal design flaw and Fred didn't want to be associated with them until it was fixed. One of his old partners spearheaded the upriggers and didn't do the extensive testing that he told Fred he did, but thats a whole different story.
I believe that Fred is working on something similar and I sure we will hear about it as soon as it released.

Whats up Ted? Gotta question, what the hell is an uprigger? I had downriggers and outriggers and even a center rigger for planer boards on the old boat, but I have never heard of upriggers.
Before i try to explain it, let me see if I can find a picture of it. BRB

check out this thread and it has some pictures.
Cap. Archer UpRiggers More info??
Like I said before I think they were having some problems with them and are working on getting the kinks out.

What was the problem/design flaw ??? They looked fine to me.

All right I dont get it. I see one rod sticking up at an angle like its in a rod holder, then I see another rod hanging by the the reel. Is it just to let the pole stick out lower, or is the line of one clipped on to the other? Which is what I think of when I think of any kinda of rigger. It seems to me if you want the line coming straight back that low you'd throw the rod in a holder and run a flat line rigger off of the transom. I guess Im missing the reason for having a rod horizontal like that. What is the reason for not using the flex of the rod?
Fred was consistently promoting them for around four years. More than enough time for his razor-sharp attention to detail (not to mention those of the FredSquad, who were equally keen on 'em) to pick up any fatal design flaw. Indeed, I recall him saying he would rather do without outriggers than upriggers. Mayhap the fatal flaw happened in his relationship with the captain he used to say all those nice things about. Sorry ta be the house cynic.
Hi Zummy,
I can shed a bit of light on this at the risk of getting slammed.
Bob Melville invented the uprigger. It allows you get an extra rod deployed in the corners, with one upright and another shotguned off a strap. They fit in a rod holder so it's great for small boats without a transom rail.
Fred told me that the metal would bend, but I've heard conflicting stories on this since. I don't believe Bob is selling them now, so it's likely you'll have to wait until Fred knocks them off to acquire a set.
