We Got a chance to cross to the Bahamas in our 39 venture for the first time this year and it was for my brother PJ’s 40 Birthday. We got real lucky with the weather window and actually had some of the glassiest conditions we have ever had. Not too many words can sum up what it’s like to catch 20 different species and over 50 fish in a day. We started out the first day on memory Rock and we were excited to fish our new Shimano Talicas on our new JPR standup rods which did not disappoint, in fact we are going to be replacing our entire set of stand up 50’s for Sharking and Tuna with these Talica 25 reels.
Day One:
We started by anchoring and chumming the reef which was followed up by High-speed jigging the ledge.
Notable catches for day one were a 52lb king, 30lb wahoo, some large Aj’s, some nice yellow tails, and two decent groupers.
Day Two:
Day two was probably one of the greatest days of fishing on the Insufishent Funds. We started with a long run to the matanilla Reef on the north side of Grand Bahama where we were greeted with very slick seas. We started by drifting baits and bouncing jigs for grouper and snappers but quickly noticed a school of Blackfins had popped up a couple of hundred yards away. We started casting the Shimano Wax Wings and Sting-o PBJ Jigs at them and landed 4 out of about 6 hookups. After that calmed down we had our first pod of Mahi roll in and we went 4 for 6 on them. This is where the Wax Wing Shined the Mahi could not turn down the action of the lure. After that calmed down we were cleaning up the carnage on the decks when we had a pack of very large Wahoo’s come right up to the starboard side of the boat. This is where it got crazy! We hooked two of the very large Hoo’s , one on a Wax Wing JR on a Bait runner 4000 and one on a Sting-o PBJ 150 Jig on a Stella 8000 both of which were clearly out matched. We pulled the hook on the Stella after a blistering run around the boat almost decapitating my crew. Then we had the Bait runner down to 3 wraps of the 30lb braid before we gunned the Venture to regained line. The new bait runner 4000 handled the battle flawlessly and after 45 minutes of chasing the fish, a 65lb Hoo was brought to gaff. Also a special tahnks to AFW for some seriously tough tieable wire. A couple of Snapper and Triggers later we were exhausted and on our ride back to Bootle Bay.
Day Three:
We were only going to be fishing a half day because we had to run back and catch flights that night so we decided to anchor at memory rock and fish the reef. When we got there we had a terrible wind against tide and just couldn’t really get anything going so we decided to drift the reef instead. We picked at little groupers and snappers until the last drift when we got covered up in Mahi again and the circus act started. We ended up landing 4 of the 7 we hooked and finish our trip strong. The Bahamas are an incredible place with tons of life and wonderful people………..
