Ok well we put a crew together and headed off Friday to the Wilmington canyon.
Capt Kobey from Bunkerhead and Capt John seafood and Capt Admin prepared Friday afternoon to go and fill the boat with some meat.
The ride out was awesome 40 knots flat and I mean flat seas. Gotto the Wilmington canyon around 6 pm and saw only a few boats off in the distance so we decided to Tile Fish. Grab a couple really nice 30 to 40 lb tile a couple grey’s and a ocean perch. Box now had plenty of meat in it and we were ready to set up for the night.
Over Under Adventures !!!! Thanks man for looking out for us. When we got done tile fishing we had not had a chance to check out the water and find a good place to set up. Trey got us on the radio and told us he was only a few miles from us and had a 4 degree break. So we looked down at the water we were in and it was dirty greenish brown so we decided to move.
Got set up in blue 75.5 degree water and started to chunk and get some sword lines out. All the sudden I look down and see this one really nice squid and I netted him up.
Spread was a huge dead squid we got will tile fishing, 1 live squid down around 100 foot, and a couple butterfish lines out.
Well by now im saying to myself there is 3 Capts on the boat and to be honest im having a lot of issues watching capt kobey dippen and since I just quite a week ago I decided to lay down for the night.
Well at some point in the night I got woken up by capt kobey almost getting pulled over the side, I look over and he is slammed against the gunnels with the rod almost straight down in the water. Well we got kobey all set up with belt and harness and he started doing what he does very well and that was fight fish. About a hour into this we were pretty sure this was a really nice sword and we knew we still had a long fight ahead of us.
All the sudden you saw a little pull from the fish like some thing was briefly wrapped on him and a couple quick head shakes and that was it, fight was over.
Well around five am I looked at the gps and we had drifted over to the west wall and I wanted to troll the am bite on the east wall. Full moon and great visibility we packed up and put out a trolling spread in the dark. Worked our way back over to the east bite and sun up we nailed 2 yellow fins. About an hour later we pulled a long fin off the flats.
Well we trolled and trolled till around 11 am and we heard nothing but Weeds on the left weeds on the right. So we decided to try chunking and jigging.
Did not have any success and the boats coming right up next to us to see what we were doing did not help either L
I thing I did see was a school of tuna swam right past the boat only about 10 fish though.
We ended our trip with 2 yellow fin, 1 long fin , 1 mahi , and box of tile.
Had fun great weather good friends and flat seas J
Capt JOHN
