    tuna population

Does anyone else think the recreational sector takes more tune than the longliners. If you think about it say 100 boats in each canyon, talking about the northeast fishery, and each boats averages say 8 fish if you do the math for all the canyons on any september night it equalls alot of tuna fish. It seems most people blame overfishing on the longliners, but in todays world i think the recs. do more damage than the comm. guys, especially charter boats that do it a couple times a week.

You live in a very small world. What is the populatin of the U.S 300 million? How many Tuna sandwitches do these 300 million eat each year?, how many seared tunas in resturants? Theres a little place across each pond as well.
It would not be very difficult to come up with a "reasonable" estimate of Rec. catches on the east coast. Simply Start in Daytona and make a list of every major fishing center, jot down the Tuna season up the beach, dive by about 3 for weather, multiply by a reasonable number of boats and then estimate fish per boat. I guarantee you will be amased at how small the tonnage is.

well i think it would be alot higher than you think, actually here in new jersey the canyons look like a small city and everyone it after tune fish alot of boats limit out trip after trip coming in with 20 some fish. its just somethimg i was thinking about, everyone always blames the comm. guys, but i think that the rec. sector has just as much to do with the decline in tuna fish populations. where i am from the sport boats outnumber the comm. boats by maybe 1-250 boats.

It wasn't my intention to put "blame" on any group. Just doing some cyphering is all.

Then again Glenn, you have to consider how much of the various "tuna products" consumed here are in fact a US product or from the US commercial fleet and not imported product. We may all be surprised! Likewise, not pointing in any direction just something to think about.
