    TUNA HELP OI??????

EACH MAY AROUND THE 25TH I TRAILER THE BOAT DOWN TO OI FOR A FEW DAYS.THE PAST FEW YEARS THE DOLPHIN HAS BEEN EASY PICKING BUT THE TUNAS HAVE EVADED ME. WE TROLL A 7 ROD SPREAD CONSISTING OF A BAR DOWN THE MIDDLE AND HOOS' EVERYWHERE ELSE . I FISH 90-180 FLURO LEADER, I USE SPRO WINDON SWIVEL WITH 20 FT OF LEADER TO MY BAIT.THE BAITS RANGE FROM NAKED TO SEAWITCHED TO ILANDERS. WE FISH AROUND THE POINT AND USUALLY DON'T GO DEEPER THAN 100 FATHOMS DO I NEED TO GO DEEPER TO FIND THE YELLOW FINS? I'M DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT TO MY KNOWLEDGE BUT SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT WITH THE TUNAS? ANY IMPUTED WOULD BE HELPFUL. THANKS

I'm no pro but I have fished with pros out of OI many times.
Sounds like there is nothing wrong with your spread. Most of the boats fish 130# clear mono leader so you might want to stay around 130 # floro. Make sure your leader is fresh and not cloudy.

The point can be a good area but so can a lot of other places farther north. Usually by the first of June tuna fishing can be good anywhere from the 400 to the 850. 100 fathoms is a good depth but sometimes they are shallower or could be deeper. As far out as 500 fathoms. Everything depends on the water conditions.

If you or anybody on your crew has a smart phone look at the satellite shot on Rutgers,
http://marine.rutgers.edu/mrs/sat_da...region=capehat [/U], that morning and make a decision on where to fish before you leave the dock. The water is constantly on the move and a spot that was great yesterday may be dead today.

There is no simple answer that for sure. Listen to the captains on channel 80, have quality ballyhoo, make sure they are swimming good. Go to the fishing center the evening before and walk the docks. Talk to the captains and mates. They are all good guys and I have found they are very willing to help out the small boats. Better yet charter them for a day and learn all you can.

Just keep fishing and try to learn as much as you can.

    Hope this helps a little,

    Byron

Dont forget about the kite,or the planer. You can also use smaller than 130, sometimes it makes a difference.Lots of different things to try,the biggest thing is DONT GIVE UP,keep at it.
