caught a mako last year out of OC on a black/red ilander and medium bally off the left long...pure luck/accident, mono leader, he was hooked perfectly in the jaw and got him to the gaff.

    Other then that, no idea

    Rabcoman,
    It works very well!

Id suggest reading Capt Archer's book on the subject, as he has done more trolling for/caught more sharks than most (on BOTH coasts!). It is available in both print and e-book form.

Cover is below, along with a couple shark trolling extras also available on the website ...

I had a mako (best guess) crash my port long rigger two summers ago. It had a pink/white ilander w/hoo on it, I saw the white water explode and the reel took off for about a 1/2 second then nothing. I brought it to the boat to evaluate, and the mustad 10/0 hook had an issue, the only piece left was the eye of the hook with 1/2" length of shank. I am assuming it had to be a mako.

It happens.....But I think it is most of the time a lucky day when it does. It does not happen often, but they WILL and DO bite most anything that one would have in their Tuna spread, and have been known to do some damage on teasers. (This is why most of my favorite teasers I build on cable because a lit up mako will clip it right off. Usually when a mako bites a trolled bait, get ready for an explosion, because they get all charged up following that bait up, and they usually pounce on it, I have been lucky enough to see it a time or two. But like the others said, Makos and threshers will both not hesitate to wreck havoc on your tuna spread, if you happen to run over one on a lucky day. An unlucky day would be if he comes in sniffing around the spread, and decides to clip off 400 dollars worth of lures without as much as a toothache and never hooks up. Really I prefer chumming for sharks, but I am sure, (Fred Archer explains how) there are guys who troll strictly looking for the cobalt missile. Good luck, and be careful...And I don't consider a mako dead even after I pump a little banana clip of 22's into its head. Those things are downright nasty and get pissed off.

Last year in OC I was checking baits after another boat crossed too close. Had the starboard baits dangling from the riggers and had a 200+lb mako come airborne crashing a all cyrstal jag. Line screaming, and she is jumping like crazy, thought she was going to jump in another boat...several around. She pulled several hundred yards and must of jumped a dozen times. Finally got her boatside and she was tail-hooked, I guess she spit the hook and landed on it during one of the jumps. I had a crew of first timers so I used the gaff to pull up the jag to save it and cut her loose.
Can't say if trolling for them works or not but that one jumped clear out of the water after the bait.
