    Trolling Reel/Line Question

OK, I just picked up a trolling reel that i plan on using inshore for Stripers (umbrella rigs & Mann's , etc). Do I have to do anything special or add a backing? I was planning on using 50# braid, just not sure how I should set it up... any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

If you want to use trolling wire stick with some monel..

If you want to troll with anything else i would stick to mono.. Alot of guys tend to use briad but there is no reason for it when trolling..

If you are trolling depth over 100ft which i doubt then i wouldnt even both with the briad since you are going to need a top shot of monofilament or flourocarbon anywhoo..

Get yourself some nice 40lb or 50lb mono like momoi or something you prefer to use and stick with that.. braid is only good for really the capacity.

plus i like to have a little bit of extra stretch which is good with striper fishing to allot them to hit it..

    JUST MY OPINION! lol

I would suggest putting some mono or dacron backing to build up the diameter of the spool before adding your braided line. This of course depends on the reel you are using and what you are looking for in a retrieval rate, for a 330 penn, okuma 20, tld 25 or similar sized reel I like to put around 1/3 spool of backing on so that my retrieval rate isn't too slow. Personally I rarely use more than 500 feet of braid on a striper rod because these are usually my deep rods and I rarely let a braid line out to 200 ft. I generally run umbrella's or double bucktail or parachute rigs from these rods and use a loop to loop connection between the backing and braid and have never seen the knot unless I'm respooling. Monel is great for deep lines and many old timers will tell you that it gives a hum in the water that draws striper bites but to me braid is much more forgiving (no kinks to worry about, especially with charters) and far more versatile so I use it. When striper trolling a run about 50 percent braid rods and 50 percent mono. I prefer 80 braid and use it for several seasons, I just redo my knots frequently. This just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

    Thanks

    Thanks for input...
I don't know if it will be an issue but should the backing be the same weight rating as the braid?

I have 3 rods set up with mono already that I've used for trolling Mann's 25+. I now have added an Umbrella rig to the arsenal, so I figured Braid would be a better option as the leader on the rig will give a little stretch at the strike, but would also give me little more line capacity.
I also think its important to try combinations (Braid vs Mono) to see which set up works better for different conditions... live and learn as the say.
