In tournaments you can have 30 feet of combined leader material including the wind on. The wind on does not become a second leader.

Actually Franky, isn't it 15' for 20lb and under.Though I think some light tackle tournys allow 20ft for the leaders. Not sure though.
As far as 30lb and over you are alowed 30ft. of leader (leader includes wind on and trace). Doubles are not permitted for release purposes (or should I say "not included")and as stated if the double is touched it won't count for a record or a tourny release.
Yes, IGFA clearly states the length of double which is allowed. For some heavy tackle fishing with "old school" 30ft non crank on leaders anglers would put the breaks on when the double line would get on the reel. That is where I see the inclusion of double lengths in IGFA regs. But for general fishing now days with 30 to 80 lb tackle most of us include the double simply as means of connecting the actual leader.

I never fish 20 pound, so I probably have that one wrong- I did not check or read all of the original post quoting the book, because I found it too confusing. (thats not a knock on you canyon gear- it is a knock on the wording the books use- I am a huge fan of K.I.S.S)
And wayne is correct- the leader is what starts when the mainline or double line stops. It can have numerous connections, but on the 30 class and up it cannot exceed 30 feet. And the combined leader and double line (if a double is used) cannot exceed 40 feet.
Make sure not to touch the double line, and the release does not count until the knot or swivel or splice touches the rod tip, or the mate grabs it.

Franky..
no biggie, the post was made and thought was put into it..believe me I do know the rules..on leader lengths etc..it's the inbetween like alot of things in life that catches ya by the short hairs..
the windon deal i was never sure about since we used them one season about 5 years ago..and then quit..
no particular reason that I recall other than re-spooling and we decided to topshot everything and go direct with fluoro leaders..if my memory serves me right. The fluoro certainly helped with hookups on the straight up lures and the top shot helped with mid season respooling..just seemed more efficient at the time..
Not to say that wind-ons aren't the kick, just what we did for a few busy seasons.
I also recall, it was easier on the switch over from trolling to chunking utilizing the same rods, untill we got the HD 30's for night chunkin on the yo-yo's..
just seemed the windon's didn't fly with the whole gig ..at the time..
best of my recollect..
