I've always rigged them like everyone else but is there a reason we don't put both ends of the mono coming in and out of the hook through the chin weight? Also does it matter where you connect the monel?

IMO, I think you would be better off if you drill 3/16" or 1/4" holes on the edge of the baskets every 1-1/2" apart around the edge.
Then put your rig hooks into the holes so they don't slide and make a mess and tangle with each other.
Then use the twisty curls for keeping them loops neat and tangle free, they are worth a few bucks.

So, can you find non-coffee colored Stainless anymore? That's why I switched to piano wire last year - seemed to make a difference.
I did notice though that if it went in the water piano wire rusts, so I change it every time...
