Tonga Fishing report for November

November bought mixed weather & sea conditions but the fishing was excellent with a good run of Yellow Fin & Blue Marlin. The bait runs included Skipjack and Kawakawa but the schools were always fast moving and live-baiting proved difficult. The water temperature remained consistent at around 28 degrees despite the varying sea conditions and heavy rainfall.
Billfish Action ......... The South Bank really fired up the last few weeks of the month producing 6-8 Blue bites a day. The average size was around 90kg with a few larger fish in the 200kg range. The Blues hung close to the drop offs with a good concentration found in the 150 to 200 meter depth. The Sea Mounts also fished well but very much weather dependent. Sails were around in the shallower drop offs with reports of 35kg-50kg fish. Mid month, the FAD started holding reasonable numbers of billfish and by month end the fishing in the middle ground produced good catches and lots of variety. The hottest lure colour still prevails – black over purple, medium head size.
Yellow Fin Action ...... The run continued well into November with fish up to 65kg but the average size was down on October to around 45kg. The schools were very fast moving and most of the larger fish were caught on small lures especially lumo & fruit salad combinations.
Wahoo Action ............ A little harder to find despite the bait close to drop offs. Average size was around 15kg and the best concentration was down the South Bank area. A few larger fish were reported around the Middle FAD up to 20kg.
Mahimahi Action ........ Very slow for this time of the year and no large fish reported over 18kg. The best concentrations were around the Middle FAD and out west in the current lines where there were large schools of flying fish.
GT Action .......... The weather was an impediment for several weeks but on settling, there were some good fish in the 20kg-30kg range caught. Reef fishing was also a bit slow due to the weather but some good coral trout up to 7kg were reported.
Tournament News ........ Tonga National Tournament
Day One, Saturday 27th November was postponed due to adverse sea conditions following a nasty low that took a few days to settle down ......so watch out for the December Report for full results.
