Tonga Fish Tales Newsletter – February 2011

February .... Most of the Pacific experienced unsettled weather and Tonga was no exception. Apart from a few days of strong winds we had rain and yet more rain and very persistent northerly swells. In between the weather patterns we had a few good days fishing and by the end of the month a welcome weather change and a run of fish.
Billfish Action ......... Those that got out fishing reported it was hard going and the bite was slow. The blues were there but the strikes were lazy and half hearted. No big fish were caught with the average around 80kg. The bait concentrations started building again and by month end there were large schools of skipjack and school size yellow fin together with masses of flying fish. March should see much improved billfishing.
Yellow Fin Action ...... The odd good fish was reported in the 70kg plus range – a pity the weather was bad as February usually delivers good runs of big fish, especially west of the FAD areas.
Wahoo Action ............ A few good fish reported in the 20kg range but generally it was slow going and hard to fish the reef areas due to the big Northerly swells.
Mahimahi Action ........ Not much better than last month but started to improve late in the month. A return to the SE weather patterns started to bring in reasonable numbers of fish in and the Middle Area held some good bulls in the 20kg range.
GT & Dog Tooth Action .......... Hard going in the inner Eastern Reef areas due to the heavy swell activity. On a few of the better days heading out to two offshore Islands produced a lot of action and numerous bust offs - some good GT’s and Dogtooth reported.

15th - 21st September, 2011. This is Tonga’s most prestigious event for the year and is a qualifying tournament for the IGFA Offshore World Championship.
NZFN Tournament - 20th- 26th October, 2011
Tonga Nationals Tournament - Saturday 26th November, Saturday 3rd & Monday 5th December,
