We took my cousin and his friends out for a bachelor party. The guys had never been offshore before and wanted to catch some tuna. The only good thing about the trip was the weather was the nicest all year and the guys didn't get sea sick.
We left the dock at 2:15 am and arrived at the Toms around 5:15. We trolled around the tip picking up a gaffer mahi and then worked our way out to the deep, eventually found a long line and trolled around it, after a couple hours still no fish. We trolled around pretty much the whole canyon, picking up another mahi at the tip. The water looked great, we had whales, porpus, and scattered schools of bait on the surface.
The Yellowfin just would not cooperate for us and most of the boats in the canyon. We did here some chatter of fish being caught at the Hudson, I think Big Eye and a boat had some tuna at first light in the toms. I talked to a couple buddies who fished south and they also couldn't find any fish. I really hope this isn't going to turn into what happened last year.
I think the water might have been north and south.. I dont think other then the big eyes there were any "big" yellowfins caught but i know there were a bunch of sub legal and legal fish caught just nothing like 50lb or more!
They are there i just think the water moved a little bit out of the toms..
They are sometimes up in the flats along the 50 line also.
