Last year i ran a 36 hour trip by myself. My brother couldn't jump on as mate, and my father was tied up at work.

I was awake and ran the boat for 36 hours. They tipped me 30%, i was very grateful.[/QUOTE]

Dude I believe that is illegal. I thought you have to have two licenced captains on board for an overnighter. Please dont take this the wrong way Im only making you aware of it so you dont get in trouble.

I started a TIPPING THREAD some time ago, search "Tipping on a Charter Boat". Got a lot of opinions on that subject.

Some good and some not so good but as you will see there is a wide range of whats expected. Good Luck figuring it out.

if he does the job, sure tip him.
and often the captain is anyways not the owner of the boat, so tip him. and even if that dude is the owner of the boat and does exactly that job, tip him.
i would never allow that any of my boys run's a offshore charter alone, no 2nd Cap or 1st Mate on board, that's dangerous, there are many situations which can come up one moment to an other where you need the assistance of a buddy on board on who's actions on the situation you can trust, right away/quick. on the lil 29ft'er we run the rides always alone, but that's fishing along the reef or nearshore light trolling for cudas/maji's aso, and it's a small 29ft yamaha with 2 outboards. offshore and specifically an overnighter: never alone.

If 12 hr duty is the rule... i think 1/2 the captains North of Va Beach are breaking this rule...
But really... some people can handle it... some cant...

    tipping

I run charters without a mate. I would say 30-40% of my customers are not big time offshore fisherman. They just want to go bend a rod while down at the beach. Some know to tip, some don't. I took care of that problem by posting a profession looking small notice that simply says the captain works for tips. Problem solved.

Of course it is. How do you handle that situation though? Even the mate isn't licensed. Granted i would have rather had my mate on-board since he could have helped.

Welcome to Mid Atlantic/Northeast Offshore fishing fellas. Like DropinBack said, this isn't a 25 mile run to the fish, or chasing swords at night 10 mile off Palm Beach.

So let me ask you this...

Let's say i toss the lines at the dock at 3am, steam to the Lobster Claw, fish till 3pm (which is common) then chug back in. That's about what? 15 hours? Well you're breaking the law then.

Staying awake for 36 hours is hard, believe me. The first 24 are fine, the next 12 get dicey. If you have your shit together, and are confident in your abilities, then do what you feel is right.

Granted, you fall asleep, crack up, and someone gets hurt...you are screwed. Simple as that

And it wasn't about the tip, it was about putting these guys on the fish.

    absolutely right Jay,
it is like it is as a matter of fact,
and it is like you wrote about it, lawful or not doesn't matter.
if something happens your're screwed, absolutely right, thanks god my boys are not reading such online postings after i try to hammer in some safetu rules in their caribbean heads.
my only question left after reading about the common practices up there on your north is:
why the heck the guys from there when coming down to fish with us southerners on the caribbean isles always, and i mean always, ask that lot of BS about this and that safety stuff aso, when it is anyways usual practice up there in their own home to not care about it?
maybe b/c they look for a place where to feel safe?
same like the cry out for catch and release of the Billies.
of course the millionaire tournaments and the northern longliners are allowed to weight 'em in, lol.
rules should be rules, but of course they are just talk, i know.

totally agree to the prior post which states "hey, everybody thinks we charter guys are anyways millionaires".
yeap, the poor boys who pay 1K for a charter day think so, but we all know we aren't.
if i would be a millionaire i would own only one boat and be sure nobody else would be allowed to set a feet on it.
    sorry for the rant,
had a bad day with our local coast guard today, needed that.
    happy easter
