    Tilefish

First off I'd like to thank everyone here for the great information on this site! Secondly, I would like to ask for some help on a topic I am sure a lot of us weekend warriors need help with - Tilefish! I fish out of OC MD, and try to spend as much time on the 100 line as I can. I have the right deep drop rigs and outfits, and I know that the gold line tilefish live in mud burrows on the drop off in the deep. My question is as a first timer, approximately where do I start looking for them, and what do I look for on my color fish finder? East wall of the Baltimore Canyon? Poor mans? Washington? Thank you for your help!

try to find some info of the areas you will fish. The data is 1973 vintage. I would expect some change but not enough in 34 years to consider the data obsolete.

I know you were looking for canyons south. Spending more time in the search engines on google could dig up more info

in shallow water of a bay watch your depth finder when drifting over shell bottoms, sandy bottoms and mud bottoms. Take notes how you interpret the bottoms on you depth finder. When familiar with this move to deeper water, say 100' and watch again. Then when the tile day is here match the known images from inshore to what you see at the edge offshore. Hope this helps. Not all bottom machines give the same image. Trust your electronics....flat

You need to get a hold of Ron Calis from the OCFC he could get you started in the proper direction. He's the best I know. He's probally not going to tell you where he fishes but can tell you where to start and what to look for.. He's a good captain.. He always catches tile

I am in the same boat as you regarding wanting to target and try to catch a few tiles this summer. My knowledge is limited. Come over to D dock at sunset and will share what I have learned but never actually caught one. Boat name is Lady J. Hopefully one of us will figure this thing out.

I second that suggestion you talk to Ron over at OCFC. That guy is on it when it comes to the tiles.

We have happened to catch sa few tiles out of OC Last summer. I will not tell you my numbers but give you some general info.
    Here we go:

Look for the brown color on the bottom, represents mud= Tile fish.
I can see the fish on the bottom with my machine.
We caught from 80 fa to 100fa, deeper you catch the red monsters, good eating though but armored plated.
Squid or sea clams are our bait of choice.
We caught tiles in the Washington and Baltimore, the big ones are in the wilmington.
The last thing I can tell and its true, if the sun is not shining you will not catch a tilefish, I was told that , and tried on a cloudy day, did not mark any.

This should point you in the right direction, you can check out my website,
www.bansheecharters.com , go to the pics and you will see we have caught one or two Tiles.

Thanks for the info JW! Nice new ride.
I know JW catches the tiles. I fished on the boat next to his this summer and they came in with quite a few of them denizens of the deep.

I have a limited amount of experience on tiles around the Norfolk Canyon. You can see the blueline tile on your bottom machine. Here is what mine looked like a few weeks ago near the canyon. If you zoom the bottom, it does look like a hard bottom. Not sure what goldens look like as I have not caught one yet but they like a clay bottom I understand.

    And here is our result.
