Wait to you hear his story

Talked to Capt Steve last night and he has one interesting story to tell about his trip yesterday. I'm sure he will be posting a report after he gets some rest.

Fri. sharkin....and the one that got away

yesterday f.stop went out sharking dirfted south down the 20 fathom line. we dirfted about 3.5 to 4 miles. heard of a few tuna caught 40- 55lbs. to the north. we saw some tuna pushing water in the area we fished. then @ 2.15pm we got our first hit on a whole blue fish skirt and shark rig about 70 yards from boat 30 feet down. it hit like a shark pulling faster and a little faster...let him run for 40 seconds before setting the hook. at this point the fish peeled line off a 6' 50-100lbs class rods on a shimano tld lrs 50 with 1000 yards of jerry brown hollow core braid w. a 100 yard top shot of 80lbs mono. we cleared the other lines started the boat at this point the fish peeled over 3/4 of the line off the reel. it pulled the boat around about 180 degrees and even pulled my carolina classic 25 back a bit. we then chase after the fish forward at about 5 to 6 kts got most of are line back at this point we are into the fight for about 40 min. we got the fish close to being straight up and down...we are now slowly backing down on it got are line back to the mono top shot. then sam the angler says we got a problem....the reel broke off the rod breaking completely off the grafite body crakes in two. i grab our bent butt 80 clip on the main line with the snap swivel to the top off the broken reel where you connect your fighting harness to the reel....toss the rod and the broken reel in the water($800.00). we are now fighting the fish on the bent butt 80 we gain are line back to the broken reel. we at this point need to take a "chance"... the next step to get this fish off the broken gear to the main line of the 80 put on the leather gloves take a wrap on the line holding the fish with as little resistants as i can go to cut the the line off the broken 50 to the main line of the 80 and the fish dove snaping the line in my hand.game over we lost!

i talked to a few capt. some seem to think it was a big shark or more possiably a gaint bluefin. what ever the case it was the biggest fish i have ever hand on in this area (cape may nj) and (i've caught gint bluefin in morehead city nc up to 425lbs.) it's heart breaking but oddly enought a great battle on the water that we all, as offshore fishermen have experinced at some point i will never forget this day. there was no human error on my crew or i that i can think of.....i frimly believe we would have had this fish. the fault of the matter was the shaimano tld 50 lrs breaking. i checked the drag at strike it felt fine at about 17 lbs. pound at strike. talked to some other fishermen at the dock that had the same 50 tld lrs reels brake on them....in the same place. well thats my story!
