Thoughts on hardwiring a deep drop electric?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how i should go about hardwiring my new electric reel setup? I am looking to fit the end of the cord with a twist lock plug then install a twist-lock receptacle into fiberglass somewhere in the cockpit.

    14 ga. wire ok?

Can anyone reccomend a plug and socket?

I am going to wire it right off the batteries to a circuit breaker on one of the bulkheads.

I used a #6 or #8 with the Krystal plugs. Worked great.

I think #12 or #14 with a 30 amp twist lock will also be fine.

Will the Kristal plugs work with any 12/24v reel?

I've got 2 marine receptacles - twist lock mounted under the gunnels on my boat. They are hardwired back to the main panel.

I believe the box, and socket are made by Hubbell, but it really doesn't matter. You could hardwire Krystal receptacles under your gunnels and change the plugs on your reels to match.

Well the good thing is there are no plugs on the end of the reels so i can put what i want on there. I think I am going to go with the Kristal since it looks a little easier to mount given my application.

Next question...should i be putting a breaker in between the batteries and the receptacle?

depending on the reel, it might have a breaker in it but you should wire the plug to your breaker panel anyway, not directly to your batteries. If you are going to go through the trouble of wireing this up, make sure you get a double recepticle so if you want to use additional accessories at the same time you can.Hubble makes it.

i cut an orange extension cord plug off, stripped it back, and soldered alligator clips on it, and just clip it on to one of the batteries the day we go out.... i know you may want something permanent, but its just another thing for water to get into and to fail. For as many days as you probably deep drop with an electric per year, the extension cord method is pretty easy, and CHEAP.
